Impressive today, but normally he should have dropped everybody on this type of climb. He will still crack in the 3rd week, but TVG might crack too.It will be interesting which of them, has the best bad day.
Mende is too steep for Valverde, he's never been good at dictating pace on this type of climbs. The Alpine climbs next week will decide on his podium, and he likes them a lot better than the Pyrenees. Tejay will have a hard time to keep up with him.
Valverde's biggest threat for 3rd is actually Contador. AC's getting better and feeling better, he just said so on TV.

Why do you think he'll crack? He's riding into form now not losing it - ready to reach his second super-long peak of the season all the way from San Sebastian to Lombardia.

Well we'll see, this is not Vuelta. It will be amazing to see him podium, but i won't get too excited before seeing him show it on the road.

Alberto will need some better legs in the Alps. Also, this hot weather needs to move away.

Exactly. 3rd at the Tour, winning the Vuelta and winning Lombardia would cap off a great year.

Against Landa?

And why not? Is maybe Landa some kind of GT great? 2 GT's in a year is pretty demanding task, I don't expect Landa anywhere near the podium

Even with current weather and current legs 3rd place is only between those two, barring crazy events.

Too steep for Valverde aka "the uphill sprinter" alongside J.Rod,now this is confusing really.

Landa is not a regular rider. He's got enough rest-period to shine again in the Vuelta. The only concern for him is that flat TT in Burgos.

If Nibali is in great shape, he's perhaps the biggest favorite to win.

I hope Nibali won't ride.It will be no challenge for him if Froome doesn't bother.Landa won't be the leader anyway,it will be Aru.

For me it's Bala vs Purito.

Landa not regular enough, you said that yourself. Never shown anything at Vuelta, said himself that Giro is much more suitable for him. Plus 2 GT's in the same season will be his biggest problem.

Nibali, I doubt he'll reach his 2014 Tour, or 2013 Giro level this season, he's just not good enough this year. Never rode Tour/Vuelta combo, so this will be the problem too...

Aru, he's just not good enough

Landa said the other day in Spanish TV that Astana will repeat at the Vuelta the silly tactics of the Giro: ride for Aru no matter what. They may only change that if Vino insists in having a tired Nibali as well.
And why would astana do it any other way? Aru is staying, Landa is not.

After the Tour/ San Sebastian he will already have his no.1 in the UCI Pro Tour standings secured.
What a baller.

Valverde is such a gritty, crafty rider and he gives such pleasure to watch. A real racer. Oh to have been a fly-on-a-top-tube and heard the exchange b/w AV and Contadaor, before Valverde cracked him...

:p :p

Pretty desperate stuff from Contador. I bet he's regretting doing the Giro now; a win against 2nd/3rd tier riders like Landa, Aru and Hejsedal doesn't really add anything to his Palmares. A win at the Tour against this field would have been his best victory to date.

Valverde though is awesome; what an incredible racer. It should really be impossible in the modern era of specialisation to be winning multiple classics and contesting the podium in multiple GTs. Would be incredible if he could win the Vuelta again.
