He'll be 36 on Monday, and the oldest rider to have EVER won the Giro was 34.

Valverde's problem with the Giro is not his age, or his form.

It's weather, and the possibility that Landa and/or Nibali in the high mountains

Well he finished 3rd in TDF last year in front of Nibali, who is probably gonna be the main contendor along with landa. This year Valverde seems to ride as strong as ever plus he is by far the smartest of all of them so i dont see why not. Also strong team

Valverde is no ordinary rider.
Last years Tour and this season indicate that he's at his very best right now.

Giro is his biggest goal next to Rio, so he should go even stronger in may.

Needed race days, he only did T-A and the mountain stage was cancelled. Castilla is way better for preparing for F-W and L-B-L. Also no reason to take part in a risky race as AGR IMO, altho it would look good on his palmares.

Valv looked better at FW than Nibali at Trentino (or Landa too, for that matter). If there has ever been a Giro route suited to Valverde, this edition looks to be it.

Not too much love from cyclingnews to Valverde. I dont know how they manage to introduce his 2 years doping ban in every single article they write about him. Looks clearly they dont like much him.

IMHO there are only two stages in the Giro that could create some problems for him, Risoul and the day after, but before there are plenty of occasions to gain time with hilly and medium mountain stages.

He did ok in the Lombarda-Bonette stage in the 2008 Tour when he was a baby. His GC failures in the Tour do not follow a consistent pattern: 2007 was the mid-race ITT, 2008 an early mountain stage, 2013 the echelons, 2014 he faded in the last MTF and ITT.

The weather got the better of Valverde today considering he was in good shape.A Giro with bad weather will seriously diminish his chances to get a decent result.I still find strange his decision to ride it.

Valverde will be in for a tough Giro with this shitty European weather, hopefully it gets better. At least the weather was nice in Trentino. He is turning into a shell of himself under these conditions..... The Tour 2013, 2014 and 2015 probably being the best examples.
