Team Jayco was confident that O'Brien would do a good ride which was a surprise for me - Historically this is a bit slower than normal for the Aussie ITT. I suspect having the ITT after the RR affected the times.

Durbridge rode more or less the same time as last year, 46:47 vs 46:42. It's just that last year the winner Rohan Dennis was more than a minute ahead, now it's just 3 seconds for Jay Vine.

The difference is that the road race is traditionally after the ITT - I think having the RR two days before the ITT added around 30 to 40 seconds to the times.

It would have been touch and go for Plapp to win if no mechanical - This is the second time ( other time 2015 ) that Jayco Alula has failed to win one of the men's/women's ITT or RR, since the advent of the team in 2012 - I suspect the men's RR is the one they should have won.

Really? I seriously doubt that.

Well, Durbridge interviewed after the ITT suggested the times were affected by the RR being first - Even though today was a mild 21C,the 32C for the RR would have taken it out of the riders.

Also Plapp doubted his TT chances in an interview before the RR. His RR focus meant he didn't do much TT training, and he also doesn't seem to have great recovery. With his mechanical, we won't know how much it affected him though.

What's up with antipodeans and descriptive names? We already have Corbin Strong the powerful rouleur/puncheur, Blake Quick the sprinter, and now, judging by the NZ Cycle Classic stage 2, we also have Kiaan Watts the sprinter. The young Christian Rush, who finished 9th in the same stage, will probably evolve into the second coming of Johnny Hoogerland.

Yep, but that's certainly not the case any longer as I understand it.

Of course not. At worst it would be on fire again! I should probably have added "And that was the crazy thing happening back then." Before things got... quite crazy.

And then there's Matthew Rice, who's just hungry.

Didn't that joke die with Bjarne Riis?
