Who will be the first to break the rule?

Apparently no male Australian Nat champ has won a world tour race since Gerrans so we will see.
The only time you even hear the name Luke Durbridge (or to a lesser extent, Luke Plapp) is around the Australian championships. Always a good amount of attention because they're held in January, but they're not an indicator of anything.

...
Prohibiting celebrations is more of an anti-woke thing ;)

Durbo was just cunning. He was sandbagging the last ten kilometers, exploiting Plapp's willingness to pull, and then destroyed him on the final drag up to the line.

Reminiscent of Jérôme Cousin's PN stage win over Nils Politt.
He played with his balls. Possibly after the race too?

Was there something I missed, or was this about the celebration rule (not sure that anyone was endangered)
Was just thinking ahead they would celebrate together if they stayed in front.

I guess the rule is only in a bunch sprint, so the leadout doesn't slow down too fast when going up and endanger others riders behind/next to him.

You are joking about Plapp right? Because if you didn’t notice Plapp after the nationals last season then I’m guessing you didn’t watch Paris-Nice or the Giro

I forgot about Paris-Nice, yes. I said "to a lesser extent" though, I do rate Plapp. Durbridge is really only visible in the month of January.

Plapp did finish on the podium of the UAE Tour in 2023. I expect he will return in 2025 with an ITT on the route.

Tour down under starts early hours of the morning tomorrow for us Europeans, think it's 1.49am ish CET kickstarting the WWT season

Discovery+ allegedly have coverage but with their diet of tennis & snooker at the moment it will be app only streams and prob no highlights on the channels 🙄

At this point, I'm not sure the race will be broadcast in Denmark at all. That obviously doesn't mean I won't be able to watch it, but it's on at a time where it's too late to stay up for and too early (for me) to wake up for it.

The route it pretty good though. We'll see them climb Willunga Hill twice for the first time, which could shake things up. That probably also means that Gigante's record time isn't in any danger (it might not have been anyway), but it's a shame that she is yet again unable to race.

BTW, there's still about 10 hours left until I'll stop updating my spreadsheet for my Emerging Female Riders game, so if anyone reading this thread is able to think of 16 eligible riders, why not give it a go?

The peleton will find it difficult to bring back the breakaway rider when you consider 10 of the last 20kms are downhill.

As expected Hangeveld holds on for the win. Disgraceful by Liv Alula Jayco in their home race. They have riders for the sprint final and they never put their face in the wind.

I love women’s cycling because anyone can win and if’s so unpredictable but whenever I’m watching all the teams refuse to work to chase a break I get a little frustrated.

Typical Jayco, they either use all their riders including their leader before the race even starts if they don’t even bother to try and chase. No in between.

The women's team is a worry. They can't get the best Aussie riders into the team, they lost decent riders in the off-season who have not been replaced. Their race strategy and placement of riders continues to be confusing. They had to bring Mavi Garcia for this race as Willunga Hill suits her characteristics, yet, she is riding the Trofeo races next week for the spanish team. Anyway, getting Gene bates back should see an improvement in the future.

I feel like this is exactly my comments about them at the end of last year. They also lost more experience than they have gained over the past few years and pretty much all those people look happier in another team.

Garcia is still good for willunga hill but she is really not that young. You can’t build your whole team around her especially when she didn’t look that good in the grand tours last year. Domestiques don’t like working for leaders who get dropped before they do on climbs.

I found the comments from riders who left the team last year but staying was there first option very interesting. All basically said they wanted to stay but other teams came in with better offers earlier and Jayco just kind of expected everyone would stay and didn’t extend people until quite late in the season.

I hope they can improve their season outlook but it’s pretty disheartening.

If Dygert went up the road instead of Hegevols, she would have won the stage by 2+ minutes. She was ridiculously strong today.

I've been a fan of Hengeveld ever since the stage on the Assen race track in the 2021 Healthy Ageing Tour, and now she's finally aged in healthy way!

All I can say is that the two first races in Australia for the women's elite in Australia have been awful advertisements for women's cycling. Life can only get better.

Yes I know it was late or early really but the bit I saw was enough to put me to sleep 😴 and such a weird landscape too, the brief tourist clips of the bits they were riding through made it look much better than the post apocalypse Mad Max style roads they were on
