Awww! Poor Meyer.

I thought he had it.

Yeah, me too.

Now for a few more thoughts about the race.

I liked it. :D And I'm glad Eurosport broadcast it live (throughout) on the player, and that they provided commentators as well. The lack of commentating on the player-only feeds has - to me - been one of the problems with watching a race that way. Sure, it was English commentating but... well... that's not really a problem to me.
Cadel Evans as commentator, though. Naaah... Stick to the race organising and promoting. (At least one of the other guys in the box could have given the poor guy a cough drop.)

That being said I am looking forward to races being at a bit more reasonable hours. And saying that I realise how lucky I am that I am so used to racing taking place in - or at least close to - my timezone. I guess for you Aussies having races in the middle of the night is the common way of things.

This is how he is. It's called a nervous cough, a syrup doesn't cure that
How is ACF these days anyway?

Yes a bit like Carlton Kirby's inability to commentate a bike race and not try and crack a joke every few minutes ! The ACF seems to have better things to do these days. I think he popped up during the Tour but disappeared again.

I was driving Commissaire car in Cadel's races and followed Arndt as he clawed this way back to the front group with the assistance of his team mate who buried himself on the flat section just after after Arndt was dropped on the last climb. Unfortunately my preset video recording didn't work so haven't been able to watch it as presented on TV. I reckon it would have been a good race to watch on TV.

Those 3 laps at the end really make for an entertaining race. It's also quite a tricky drive in places! The 100km before that was much more typical of a WT race and relatively dull. It was a pleasure to work with one of the best commissaires in the world.

Onto the Sun Tour next. I'll be driving Comm again so should get a good view of the race, see what sort of form Froome, Chaves and others have on the long climb to Falls Creek.

Should be a nice stage. As is stage 4, the loop around Kinglake. Although the back side of KL isn't quite as interesting as the Melbourne side (St Andrews approach) IMO.

The Falls stage really does look like a good one, the steeper side of Tawonga and while Falls isn't the hardest of MTF's the gradient keeps changing and it's long enough to cause some issues. The KL stage while not hard they still gain 1800 vertical over the 121 k's but I don't think it will be all the decisive. The good thing with this years route is that it won't all come down to the final stage, even stage 2 looks interesting if someone wants to try something on the descent into Beechworth.

Does anybody know why Robert Power didn't race yesterday?
He was on the startlist

Trying to find out the reason why Power missed - Matt White did mention riders because of injury, family reasons and training camps - My guess is Power fits into the injured category.

It's interesting to read posts from people who were intimately involved in the Australian RR - Watching BP also gave an insight into the tactics on the day.

It would be a sad promising climber if he couldn't climb.

Shame it's only the first week of February, because they're doing the wrong half of the Alpine loop. Chaves vs Froome on Hotham and the other side of Falls Creek would be something to see

I've been thinking the same thing! Then the rest of the cycling world could see that we really do have proper mountain routes down here in Oz

I was gonna make a comment about this. "He's a very promising climber, we just need to teach him how to climb."
And of course yaco went and edited his post.

Will be interesting to see if Orica and Sky both put riders in the break tomorrow. Watch for Lucas Hamilton.

How steep is the MTF tomorrow?

Al depends on where you consider the start of the climb is, to me the full climb is just after they leave Mt Beauty so it works out as 29.8 ks @3.9% gaining 1164 vertical metres over its length. The thing is the gradient constantly changes with a couple of short descents, the final 17 k's of the climb is the hardest

My understanding is the climb in this stage is around 29km at b/w 4 to 5% gradient - It's a decent test for an early season race - There will be gaps on this climb.
