Well he got 16th at the Worlds ITT in 2021, and none of the guys ahead of him tried to breat it until Ganna just now.
I think track experience and tech developments help a lot, and all things considering it's kinda surprising by how little Ganna beat Bighams record, but Ganna wasn't even in top shape himself.

We should have a race where the all WT teams are present, on a formula-one course at the same time, to battle out who can ride the fastest in an hour.
The rules should be that the first 40 minutes it would be a TTT and from there each team captain would be given free and battle it out.
Should be ridden with the possibility of x amount of electric boosts from the crank and top futuristic gear and of course no UCI rules.

Yeah, some of you mentioned good arguments, and really helped me explain Bigham‘s performance a little bit better.
Still, it‘s a little bit strange. Bigham rode 97,8% of the distance that Ganna rode yesterday, in one hour.
Ganna is considered one of the best time trialists of all time. Bigham was close to him, did only 2,2% less distance.
I honestly know not enough about Bigham. He even once won a road ITT: the TT of the Hoops 3 Days, a National Elite race in England in 2017. That is circa fourth category.
I‘m sure, there are (at the maximum) dozens of men on earth on today‘s Sunday, who never ride a bike, and who (after a preparation of one to three years) could be developed into a hour record beating rider.
As someone of you wrote, Bigham‘s 55.5 km performance just „doesn‘t make that much sense“. Maybe it touches philosophical questions: maybe one can be super talented, super strong, super intelligent, and still have other things, more important things, in life, than riding your TT bike as fast as possible, in cycling competitions, frequently.
I admit, the history of the Hour Record, just like the history of the most prestigious road TTs (Chrono des Nations, etc), includes protagonists which have been and still are talented cyclists with unique personalities: Obree, Boardman, Nuttli, Germans Peschel and Rich, Stockhausen in German Nationals, Dowsett, and others.
One thing is for sure, riders like Campenaerts or Ganna beat the Hour Record coming directly from a road race schedule at the highest pro level (30.000-40.000 kms a year, 70-80 race days on highest level; Campenaerts as one of the most powerful „Flandriens“, Ganna even winning 4000 vertical meters stages at the Giro d‘Italia). Bigham appears to be someone who lives 60% for his mind job as a developer or engineer, and is 40% cyclist. He‘s very good on the track, but it‘s a lot easier to be good there, than being good on the road, where competition is so much harder and where the real good salaries are paid (Viviani recently managed to become 7th in EC RR, and won an international Gold Medal on the track, five hours later…)…
So, the Hour Record as a discipline, as well as Dan Bigham as a person, both remain really special and somehow a mystery…

To anyone saying Ganna isn't in shape, he just rode a four-zero IP, and Biggles did a 4.05. So Danno is not exactly chopped liver, considering he and Hayter et al also nipped Ganna and his Italian mates for the TP Rainbows yesterday.
Also, both Fabian and Tony did "secret" testing with the aim of taking the Hour Record, and both had some track cycling experience but neither had the cahones to go through with an actual attempt.

How long until our local guy Bianchi becomes the first man on the Italian IP team instead of Lamon? He set jet another Italian 1KM record.
Ganna vs Milan in the IP final is a nice one.
IMO Ganna should go for the record again, but at altitute, so that nobody can get it by getting an advantage there. At the same altitude I only see guys with a legit track background who are top TTers like Bissegger and Küng having a legit shot at beating his record. All the other top TTers would have to work some time to get the track experience needed and I doubt that their teams would be too happy about that.

Hayter could be a challenger as well although I don't think that he has the engine needed. Van Aert or even Evenepoel could also challenge but they are probably too busy with other goals. Maybe Sheffield in a few years time.
