How To Use Strava For Runners

Strava is a popular fitness and social media app. It allows you to record, log and analyze every run, bike ride or swim you take. You can share each activity through your profile, which allows fellow Strava users to view your activity - and vice versa.

1. Download & Create A Profile
Go to your app store and download / install the Strava app. Spoiler alert: it's free. Next, create a profile. You can do this through your Facebook or Google accounts - or by starting a profile from scratch with an email address. Be sure to allow location tracking within the app, or else the GPS function will not work and you won't be able to record your runs.



2. Find Friends & Athletes To Follow
Search for friends and nearby athletes to follow on Strava. You can sync your follow list via your Facebook account or phone's contacts list. Alternatively, you can do it manually. Once you follow somebody, you can view their profile and all of their posted activities. Find running pros in your area and learn how and where they train. Invite friends to download the app and meet new people who share your love of running. Soon your feed will be populated with passionate runners who share common goals.



3. Adjust Your Privacy Settings
If you plan to keep a low profile socially, you can adjust your privacy settings. To keep your activities and progress to yourself - or the people you know - go into your "Privacy Controls" under "Settings." Change your "Profile Page" setting from "Everyone" to "Followers" - which will allow you to approve or decline those who want to follow you. Alternately, you can keep your profile open and instead adjust your "Activities" setting from "Everyone" to "Followers" - or even "Only You." This will limit who can see your activities once you post them.



4. Connect To A GPS Watch Or Computer
If you are a serious runner, you likely already have a running watch or similar device, such as a Garmin. You may want to sync these devices with Strava. Garmin, Polar, Fitbit and Apple Watch are examples of the many third party devices supported by Strava. Having a light-weight device on your wrist is preferable to dealing with a clunky smartphone during a run. One of the first prompts you'll get on your Strava feed after joining is to "Connect a GPS watch or computer." Click the prompt and follow the easy instructions.

You can now continue using your favorite device the way you're accustomed to, but reap the benefits of having each ride automatically appear on your Strava app. Take regular deep dives into your analytics after runs, to see how you performed through a variety of personalized stats.



5. Start Recording Activities & Explore
It's time to start a recording and go for some runs. As you do, share your activities and analyze what you need to do to be better next time. Connect with others or join a running group.
