No. I don't have a problem with "ugly" styles per se - I don't mind Froome for instance - it just doesn't feel right when a rider looks like they're hurting themselves, eg Mollema.

If Carthy wants to secure his life financially, he'll go to Sky. If he really wants to fulfil his potential, he'll go to somewhere like Lampre or Dimension, where he'll get opportunities

It wouldn't surprise me if he goes to a team like Lampre, if you look at an article like this:

Hugh did come from this british amateur team.

Lampre really really needs a leader for the Giro 2017 since Modolo ain't no superior sprinter as well.

Good racing program with the Giro and the Italian fall classics, decent support team with the likes of Polanc. Decent equipment from Merida. Decent check for a rookie. Mr. Goodlife in Italy.

Should be a move to consider!

I think possibly they will sign Kreuziger.

Bit of a Caja Rural fail in that Carthy seemed to attack and work for a Pardilla stage win instead of purely protecting his jersey... and Pardilla lost to Moreno in the sprint anyway.

Funny to think that at 21 Carthy already has the same number or more 2.1+ stage race wins than Mollema, Bardet, Rolland, Gesink, Talansky, Sanchez, Barguil, Kruijswijk, ten Dam, Majka, Kangert, Roche, Hesjedal, Uran, Zubeldia, Navarro, to pick out a few.

Helps when you ride for a PCT team with a good development program and good race strategy.

Wouldn't call that a fail: Caja almost won the stage and secured a 1-2 in GC. It's exactly the kind of thing we want to be seeing, glad that Carthy likes to have agressive races.

The last 10km of the queen stage of the Route du Sud, on which Hugh finished with Quintana. He attacked Quintana about five times - he is not going to Zubeldia his way through a career. He is now 3rd on GC.

Carthy is quite the physical specimen. How he can climb like that while riding such a huge gear, I don't know. He's going to be a formidable opponent one day, that's for sure.

We need more people like this. Doesn't seem afraid of anything and his style makes him unique. Somehow, I quite enjoy watching him ride and it was really the first time I got the opportunity to watch him closely.

A crash on the final stage of the Route du Sud saw Hugh Carthy (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) lose any chance of finishing on the overall podium. The British rider came into the final stage sitting in third place overall - less than a minute off the lead - after a strong showing on the previous day in the mountains. The 21-year-old was at least fortunate to escape any serious injuries but he blamed rider error for his fall.

However, the crash saw Carthy finish dead last on the final stage of the French stage race and concede nearly eight minutes to his rivals. He dropped from third in GC to 22nd overall.

“My teammates put me in a good position before the final climb but as we started climbing, a rider from Direct Energie dragged me by my saddle, which caused me to collide with another rider and crash. I didn’t suffer any serious injuries. I’m only battered, bruised and disappointed.”
