I don't think Taylor Phinney needs a Clinic thread

we can guess all day..but who are we?
I hope he's clean..he probably is. It's all his cycling connections and close family friends that make you want to take a deep breath.

Besides genetic gifts I would not overlook the fact that he has had the best of the best of everything in cycling to help him on his way to where he is now.

Careful now, kitty. That's not going to help your argument.

Chewy, love ya man, but unfortunately, we don't know 100% certain that Taylor is "clean" do we, especially since it's been claimed he's worked with Carmichael and/or Ochowicz. I want to say "Yes, he's 100% clean", but we just don't know. Not accusing anyone mind you, just suspicions.

That's a totally fair comment. I just saw a picture today of Axel and his prior riders at the ToC and Phinney was right next to him. Not an association I'd want if I were clean.

That being said, I believe the guy is clean.

Don't know how much of a factor good genes are. Axel had the best, and he doped and was still an average pro. However, I think Phinney is cleaner.

talking genetics, one should first test how Eddy performs in the EPO/blood doping responder competition

The racing Eddy Merckx dominated is not the same racing his son did. The events are shorter and tempo higher. Per doperhopper's comment, you'd have to see how Eddy responds to modern doping too.

We know Test will help almost everyone, but the sport has moved onto some not-yet known protocols.

I realize it's tempting to compare them, but it's not a great idea.

There's no point in comparing Merckx to anyone, and it's not about the courses or the competition.

if its any consolation, i saw Connie Carpenter in Geelong at the doping conference in the 2010 Worlds, and she was the RR in the LA Olympics in 84, and she was having a chinwag (chat) to the gold medallist in the TT in the Barcelona Olympics in 88 Kathy Watt, $hit, she won it in 92, not 88, which sort of screws with my nice symmetric chronology

anyway, they were chatting. But Kathy's husband is Carey Hall i think...

Because he doesn't. That's what it looks like to win a stage clean...you are actually exhausted at the end.

I think Phins is very likely not dope enhanced.

like Bernhard Kohl.

oh whoops, i forgot, he did not win the stages when he looked stuffed.

And Stefan Matschiner managed to f-up his final transfusion two nights before the chrono which had gone off or coagulated on the ryanair overhead baggage

Oh, I don't know. There appeared to be an enormous difference between Phinney after his win and Ulissi after yesterday's Giro MTN win...guy looked like he was ready to change clothes and go to the disco moments after crossing the line...but I'm sure there's nothing to be seen in something like that...

I'd say it's a bit like an antidoping test. A negative is meaningless, a positive is conclusive.

In this case, looking exhausted is meaningless, looking like it was nothing is probably not.

But you can't reverse the terms of the equation.

remember when chris hoy went to altitude in south America, may have been Colombia in about 2002 to attempt to break the 1km record at ~58 secs.

he just missed out.

I think Phinney has one time at 1 minute and change, and another at 1.01 and change. and his pb in the 4k ip is about 4.15 or 4.16.

But if he had to race Bobridge in January in Del Monte Adelaide in a heated velodrome, it would not be Bobridge with the IP wr, it would be Phinney, he would have got Jackie Bobby by about 3 secs imo.

I reckon Phinney could have the 1km wr, and the 4km IP wr, if they really had any status as blue riband events, and the pro income. a little like usain bolt, but on a bike.

Well, if Cancellara and Tony Martin took up the IP, I think they may have him for the IP, if they could get the souplesse down in 18months, it would take a full 18months full time to get the ability for the fixie on the boards.

But the Bolt comparison is speculative, and to me, not born out by his current state. Maybe he would PR/WR, but I just don't see that kind of dominance out of him.

You've forgotten more about doping than I know, but I just don't see a dirty rider in him right now. It may very well be there, but I don't see it.
