A long range attack is suicide because of the collective strength of Jumbo-Visma. Roglic should be the strongest rider on Civiligo.. so attacking him there is almost counterproductive. And you don't want to sprint against him. These days, he is also the favorite for winning a reduced sprint including beating old Valverde.

An ambush attack on San Fermo is the only option I see.

I still think Roglic will pulverize them on Civiligo but if a small group survives the climb.. . The race could become very tactical.

Someone like Yates is actually capable of jumping away from Roglic before the sprint.

He was not supposed to ride the Italian classics. The only reason he added all those races to his season is to score points, to have 5 Spanish riders in next years Olympics. His quest took a big hit in Tre Valle Varesine where he took the wrong turn. Especially because Spain is competing against Slovenia and Roglic ended up winning that race. He might end up in China if he really wants to have a full team at his side in the Olympics.

Of course he was supposed to ride them, he does that every year, and Lombardia is a big goal this year, since the Worlds was not really in his favor.

Bora has an incredible strong team on paper. They can't wait for Civiglio so they have to anticipate. Same for Trek.

Both Jumbo and Ineos have strong teams and will be able to control the race, hence I agree early moves won't succeed unless their riders are part of the group that goes away on Sormano.

Woods is my favorite. But Roglic will be hard to beat.

But yeah, this year some teams look really strong, we'll see.
True Roglic looked unbeatable, but Lombardia is a bit of a different monster, so it's not am easily done job.

If Sky’s efforts in monuments have taught us only one thing, it’s that you can’t just control a monument the way Sky always controlled Grand Tour stages. The races are an hour+ longer, the opposition competitors are stronger, and you can’t just let a 20-man break full of scrubs and, especially, classics specialists go 12 minutes up the road. The strong teams on the start line will be depleted by the Sormano.

Best approach is what Astana did in Liege. Let other teams work, and then blast it TTT style with 40 to go and set your guy up for the big attack.

EF domestiques contained the gap last year year okay when a 4 guy group were taking pulls among which the 2 by far strongest guys in the race. And that's while Nibali's teammates where intervening in the chase.

I think Roglic could let attacks fly on the Sormano if he keeps 3 teammates with him.

I think a much more interesting situation is if you have just a really strong pace on Sormano, the group gets whittled down to like 8 guys with no teammates there and then you can get attacks on the flat but that's also very unlikely.
