The impression I got was that Fausto is very emotional even to be at the start today. It was quite a big goal to be selected for this monument after such a tough year

I dont think he believes he can compete for the win, but he wants to give as much as possible to he race today. It doesn't surprise me he is trying to go for a breakaway. These are his home roads

Which is smart. Only way you get a result here is by being a strong big break like this and hope not a lot of riders can jump on the big climb later. Most teams are actually for once doing what they have to do.

Ghisallo south is absolutely horrible. I know people would also complain about criss-crossing at that part of the route to do Sormano east and then Ghisallo north with the long run-in, but 2006 is one of the all-time greatest editions of the race and Bettini's ride that day is one of the greatest in the sport's recent history, and it was a demonstrably easier route than this year too.

That said, this beefed up first part of the race should mean that while it's likely the shootout begins on Sormano, we can hopefully get rid of a lot of domestiques either before then or early on the climb to leave us with some good tactical racing for the last 50k rather than just a who-has-the-highest-wattage bludgeoning as too many races have been lately.

Today's route is actually pretty similar to the Ganda route of 2021 and 2023, and I'd say it's actually more difficult and selective in the finale, but Pogacar's presence guarantees it's always gonna be a sledgehammer fest no matter what.
