Purito says he might do Tour of China to win the World Tour ranking for the third year in a row, if he's close to Froome after Lombardia.

How can you not love Purito :D ?

Anyone care to post the current standings? How many points does he need? Too lazy to look it up.

Why is this race not on eurosport?

in continental Europe it (mostly) is.

I guess Sky Sports holds the rights for coverage in the UK - but they are not showing it live, only highlights

I definitely watched it on British Eurosport last year. Not sure why they are not showing it live this time

Wouldn't mind anyone out of Nibbles, Purito, Uran or Gilbert winning.
Hopefully Scarponi is nowhere near the podium, he did look in fine form at the Worlds' though:(.

Rui Costa won't be a factor. He wouldn't be motivated enough after his Worlds' win.

80 points he needs

Froome 587
Purito 507

Thanks, would be cool if he could pull it off. Just needs to finish 1st to win it or 2nd to tie it up, then get a couple points at Beijing. Hoping for Nibali 1st and Purito 2nd.

Ah, sky are showing highlights, they have 4 channels (5 if you include F1), why not show it live, would be better than Ayr vs Rangers or Badmington or Golf:mad:

I'm surprised anyone's really bothered about this, to be honest, least of all a Pro cyclist. Froome's the rider of the year, however many points Purito may scrape together in China.

It's a bit like finishing world number 1 in tennis without winning a slam, nice enough but you want the big wins.

His wins this year have totalled up to 3 stages, one in a Grand Tour (the Vuelta), one in a world tour race (T-A) and Oman.

Pretty much this.

Nibali is 4-5th, after Froome, Quintana, Purito tied with Valverde. Sorry but TdF is were the big boys compete, without help from the cars. Hopefully next year find his balls after being out climbed by Wiggins in 2012 :D

Depends where you are from is it not? Think you would find very few Italians that would rather win the tour than a victory in the gio and a 2nd place in the Vuelta. + his ride in tirreno and Trentino makes his season ATLEAST as good as Froomeys.

Well having indirect comparisons and various point systems is not really telling. Will have to wait for TdF 2014 to draw a closer to reality conclusion.

The good part is being able to have this debate. Nibal 2nd place in Vuelta at least gives a subject to debate in off season, waiting for next year TdF.

Since he beat Froome in Tirreno you do actually have a very good point, but before the Vuelta i thought Nibbles needed a win in Vuelta, Worlds or Lombardia to stand clearly above Froome, just because the Tour is so big.
I really do respect the descision to do the giro, it's just you have to be very special outside of the tour to be the best in the world without it.

I think they are very close right now, Froome might be number one because let's face it the yellow jersey is the ultimate tiebreaker in this sport and Nibbles therefore needs a larger quantity of big wins to have a better season than Froome and right now he don't.

It wasn't about who the strongest or best GC rider was, but who was the rider of the year, or in other words who had the best season. I'll give you some examples where the Tour winner wasn't the rider of the year (IMO):

2005: Boonen
2006: Bettini/Boonen
2008: Contador
2010: Canc
2011: Gilbert
2012: Boonen

2013: Nibali

I don't know about you but for me the best cyclist is the one that wins TdF, in any year and no matter how many other races other cyclists win.

You confuse "best" with "liked the most by me".

Yeah Canc & Gilbert are my favourite riders

Note it wasn't about the strongest or best rider, but the rider with the best season. There is a difference.

winning the RVV/PR double is just as big as the tour. The giro/VUelta double (AC in 08) is clearly bigger than only the tour. Atleast that is how I see it

That's how anyone not biased towards a rider from their own country sees it...

agree, plus I have lasting images of Nibali getting beaten by a 42 yo with dodgy knees.

However should Nibali take the last Monument, the season will be his imo. Neither J-Rod nor Cancellara are in play at this time.
