Come on ***, please come back here ***. I enjoy the systematic destruction of your arguments. I understand though, everyone here has your number. You are the only one left that believes your neutral detachment shtick anymore.

I'm in complete agreement with you but unfortunately the shtick has won and many Americans believe it is the proper behavior. Look at Brian Williams quaking in his boots about analyzing any of the nonsense spewed by right wing lunatics for fear he would be violating "objectivity."

One can say anything these days. ChrisE's 'two wrongs make a right' defense is unfortunately the prevailing logic of the critically thinking impaired.

My Dad would have had something to say to a certain Lance Armstrong if he had seen that commercial and survived his bout with real cancer. Between the riders I know to have been compromised by LA, Weisel, USACycling and this image from Nike supporting the privateering by same; the affect is crystalizing: this is so far beyond sport. The cynicism it takes to be that exploitive is hard to imagine.

C'mon Oldman, Lance had "real" cancer and the people in the commercial had "real" cancer too.

My Mom, bless her soul, would NOT have wanted to be in that commercial though. She hated getting her picture taken. I'm the same way.

And your Dad had his reasons for NOT wanting to be in that commercial too.

But the people in that commercial are probaby PROUD to be in there. And the "some people call me a fraud/doper/cheat/etc" script was not hidden from them I would bet.

I think that commercial is meaningful. True.
Not a "shield" but a sword.

Probably were proud to be in there. I wonder how many of them would do it all over again. Fewer, no doubt.

While I understand the skepticism about commercials like that, that's really a great commercial. And I have to agree with Polish here.

Sometimes it is hard to separate sport from everything else that is non-sport. And that seems to be what we have here. For me, I try separate them as best I can. I understand that approach may not be for everyone, and that's fine. But for me, while I do not condone what seems to have happened with LA on the bike, I fully support cancer awareness and support efforts off the bike. I may not like the man, but I do like cancer support efforts.

I would bet every one of them would want to do it over if they could.
Many more would have to be turned down. Only 30 seconds long.

And they could use EXACTLY the same script they used back then.
It is even more true today. Unproven SSDD SSDD SSDD.

Do you support spending $3.5 million selling t-shirts and calling it a "Program Expense"?

Why not call it a "program expense"?
What would you call it?

"Free Shipping" isn't really free. UPS and FEDX do not work pro-bono.
Hopefully Livestrong raised the price of the t-shirts to get extra revenue that would go towards programs. Who would complain about that? Rhetorical question lol.

If he tells the truth, then it IS a great commercial, but to quote one Greg Lemond... If he is not telling the truth, then that commercial is "the biggest fraud". And I don't mean anything about the sports.

Cancer awareness????

Who the F**K has not heard of cancer in the western world???? I imagine nearly every family in the western world has had a death in the family from cancer. It probably is the most recognised killer in the western world.

Jeez, live$trong is a brand and brands are for making money for the shareholders not for giving 2 cents about people suffering from any illness.

They'll do all they can to push their brand, yep it is a brand, even if it means using people suffering from forms of illness.

Remember Tiger Woods using his deceased father's quote to sell Nikey, these guys will sell their souls for a buck.

i bet Wood's senior would've been disgusted.

i gotta agree. i watched that and i saw myself getting the radiation. i saw myself getting the chemo. i saw myself after surgery to remove half my lung, my face with no eyebrows, my scars, my steroid bloated body, my pain, my fear, my determination, my family, my friends, and the list goes on. three years ago today i was diagnosed with lung cancer, and i'm still here. i like that commercial, and i appreciate everything that anyone has ever or will ever do for people like me. i'm sure some may disagree, and that's okay too.

Ya, ya, ya.... we know you are still here ...:p
Seriously, thats great news - I will raise a glass for you later in your honor.

But isn't what you say about the ad the exact reason why often Armstrongs misdeeds are excused? The ad deliberately and successfully pulls on the viewers emotions - but instead of highlighting his foundation or separating his sporting achievements it deliberately draws the two together..... to sell Nikes.

Regarding Earl Woods, El Tigre learned his morals from somewhere.

You're right! Lance Armstrong is the head cheerleader against cancer which is a very lucrative occupation.

He cheated like crazy and conducted a fraudulent criminal enterprise to become the head cheerleader but he is in fact the head cheerleader. Thanks!

Selling Christmas tree ornaments and bottles of wine "Raise Awareness"? Really? $3.5 million worth? Most people would say there are more effective programs to use donor funds on.

It certainly helped raise awareness of Nike

i suspect Woods Jnr's misdemeanors to be due to steroid/PED abuse which can heighten sexual promiscuity.

but never discount a 'brand' to use souls to sell product, á la live$trong

So you will agree that EVERYTHING Lance said in that ad was TRUE.
Truth in advertising. Truth will set you free.

You miss my combined point, entirely. Lance was raising only his personal financial awareness. That's been his point of being and cancer was seized upon as an opportunity by both he and Nike. See it for what it is: a fraudulent individual and a notoriously exploitive corporation teaming up for profit.
If may tug at your heartstrings as a family member or direct survivor of cancer but that's not the motive of the producers.

Earl was known to screw around while Tiger was a kid. Tiger cried about it to a HS girlfriend.

Earl also enjoyed the monetary rewards of Tigers success. Butch Harmon was coaching Tiger for his US amateur wins btw and most thought there would be a big windfall from the time Tiger was 15 or 16.

...and remember he was riding "on the house" - "this ones for free, its on me" - which we later find wasn't true.

Its a dreadful way to draw people in and make them part with hard earned money especially during a global rescission.
