I stand by what I said 100% - maybe "buddy" was the wrong term - I should have said "dope dealer". :)

Wow, after watching him on today's stage...the dude is doped to the gills. OH wait...he fried himself after 2km at the 5km mark. Maybe not.

Actually this is flawed:

Whereas fantastic performances in the last twenty years almost invariably have been linked to doping, we can also see that doping does not mean you win everything/can not boink.

Ulrich was hardly clean, but boinked terribly in 1998.
Ricco was doing incredible things, but did not come close to winning a GT (isn't that odd?)

On Gilbert; much has been written in this thread. The problem here is quite tough as it is not proof... but it is "odd"

1. You have to believe he is the first clean winner of LBL in ages.
2. This same clean winner also wins AGR and FW. This has been done once in the near past, by a notorious doper.

But it goes a bit further:

3. He tapers his form a little bit, but keeps on winning (B-races).
4. Just before the TdF he hits top shape and wins Nationals+ dominates the first week.
5. After the resting day he manages to be rather visible in the first mountain stage, which is not his cup of tea.

I love his riding style and I love it if he was clean. But it's just such an incredible stretch of the imagination...

ya if we take into account that he started the climb with 1 minute of advantage over the main guys isn't all that unbelievable

From the top of my head I recall he lost more time last year in the Vuelta climbing to Xorret de Catí (he lost the red jersey that day) than yesterday in Luz Ardiden. It must be that he's not well suited to short and steep climbs like Catí. May also be a matter of motivation. He just needs a MTF stage win to become the new Jalabert

gilbert in this tour reminds me of schumacher in 2008 or vino in 2007.

he seems to feel so strong he can attack on every single stage.

He is either clean in a clean peloton, or blatantly jamming it in our faces.

i agree.

i like gilbert and based on his past (Kimmage story, etc...) I have hope that he is evidence of a cyclist who was expected to dominate but couldn't when blood doping could be used without limits.

is it too much to hope that this is just an instance of a naturally gifted rider finding a different playing field with limited blood doping and no needle policy? the blood doping would have to be really really limited for a clean rider to triumph -- even an outlier.

so -- what to think?

i really don't know.

the riding in the alps by the leaders was markedly different than any time since 1990. gilbert has been able to do this all season practically (a la merckx) -- while still showing his limits in the high mountains. and i keep coming back to how would racing and the natural hierarchy play out once blood doping was curtailed enough.

i would expect it to look something like this.

but i am probably too optimistic.

It's rather ironic isn't it? You clean up the sport (to some degree) and what happens?

Cheats prosper....

I still can't understand what satisfaction these guys get out of their "victories". Takes all sorts I suppose.

This year Gilbert will sign a three year contract worth at least 4 million dollars . . . .
