Struck me as odd seeing as I thought it was gonna be an all-Aus team.

I think the goal is more likely to just get as many top Aussies as possible--which won't be enough to fill an entire team--and throw in a few foreign stars and/or domestiques as needed. Pretty much like Sky, just without the delusion that a countryman (assuming they don't get Cadel Evans) could be on the brink of winning the Tour.

It seems GreenEdge has an open cheque book ? Doubtful. Neither do I think they are under the illusion that they will will a grand tour in the forseeable future. There are plenty of Australians to choose from but how many will be off contract. I don't think there is any way they would chase someone like Pozzato considering how much it will cost them and the problems he has had. There are much younger Aussie riders getting consistently better results than Pozzato. Why would they bother ?

I think whats a shame with Pozzatto is that he is an extremely classy rider but that is part of the problem - because it looks so effortless it seems like he isnt putting in the effort. His comments regarding accepting advice from Cippolini smack of a know it all teenager.

He almost needs to park his pride and connect with a DS who is going to say "I will put you back into the top flight but you need to do x, y and z yourself".

Very classy rider but just needs to nail the attitude.

I don't see how Sky would benefit from signing Pozzato. They have a heap of quality cobbles guys who don't win already. Lampre seems an OK fit. Actually, Leopard would be great, because they'd have another option in the finale of the classics when everyone handcuffs themself to Canc. Take the pressure off, too.

agree Sky would have no use for him as he is now, but for him to function as another option at Leopard, he'd have to actually do more than suck wheels in a breakaway.

I remember when Pozzato first signed for Katusha he said he didn't want to go to Lampre because they were too weak of a classics team.

No way Lampre signs him, but who knows with the problems they may have coming in the future.

I hope that Pippo has to settle for a smaller continental team like Acqua & Sapone. Maybe then he'll remember how to fight for wins, instead of taking what he can get at a powerhouse team.

+1, A & S seems right, much more so than Lampre. And forget about GreenEdge, given his problems, the number of aussie riders getting results, the only way they would take him is if he brought significant points with him...

I think this would be the key. Don't know how classy he is atm...his WC performance in Geelong just wasn't.

Pozzato

Is this a Boonan post from last year or 2 years ago?
I don't recall seeing any arguments accompanied by those opinions.

+1 ergmonkey.

He can get on the Vuelta squad, and he can still ride the WC for Italy, so it's not over.

With Tchmil that's unlikely. :p
It's really going to suck if they mess up his chances of riding for Italy as well as his trade team. Not as if they need to send 8 guys to help Rodriguez, and if they take Galimzyanov, who else but Pozzato can they get to support him?

There's been rumours of Pozzato going to GreenEDGE. I think that seems more likely now. Katusha isn't working for him very well like it hasn't worked for quite a few riders.

I find that odd that they would send Karpets as GC leader. Undeniable potential but has stagnated at Katusha. They should also send Moreno at least too.

Considering the fact that Katusha only want russian cyclist on the tour the probably have no choice but to use Karpets as GC leader.

I doubt that this will make Katusha attractiv for other than russian riders in the future. The way they are dealing with foreign riders is no good.

I always liked Pozzato as a rider and I think it would be sad if we will not be able to see him riding anymore this season. I hope things works out for the best for him.

Dont think he would fit in with Brailsfords Age v Potential v Salary v Experience formula.

He'd fit into the bracket of rider an Italian sponsor would love to have on board though! I'm sure Brailsford will have a chat with him.

I don't like the idea, but I guess the option number 1 would be Geox, as the sponsor is located very close to Pozzato homeland.

BMC wouldnt be a bad bet for him

But, this is all being blown a bit out of proportion. Katusha want to take an all round team to the giro capable of challenging for stages so Pozzato stays at home. Think talk of his career being over is being dramatically premature.

And what formula is that? y=Bull****e^2 ???

I think the idea of doing an All-Russian team just for the sake of it is silly, especially when there are better choices for team members. I don't really think it matters whether someone is Russian, Spanish or whatever, but I guess Katusha thinks it does.

It is even more silly and hypocritical considering they blew their big GC (for Tour even!) chance with Menchov and instead went with... Di Luca who is not that popular in Russia due to Giro 2009 where they were opponents.

More to it -- to fit Di Luca into the squad they opted to give the boot to one of their young and promising russians, who was russian D23 road champion (i think).

Could Gusev potentially be a leader? Don't know him well-know he's not quite a GC type, but Karpets isn't stunning as a GC rider either.

Gusev is a strong guy for TT or one day races (not too hilly routes) but GC leader for a Grand Tour not really.
