Is Walsh on the Sky bandwagon?

Walsh: “Remember that opening scene in Forrest Gump when the feather floats through air. It can land on different people but it lands on Forrest Gump. I feel I had my Forrest Gump moment when they chose not simply to adapt my book (Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit of Lance Armstrong) but make me a character. Plenty of journalists have done fantastic investigations and never ended up in a film.”

The Program opens in Australia Nov 26.

Its made 350k GBP from a 15m budget. Won't be getting released in the US at this rate. Not sure if Walsh still talks about the movie on not but its a little embarrassing for him.

Walsh brought down lance single handed. Natural, he should be solely responsible for poor showing at box office.

Mark L

Walsh single handily brought down himself and the box office. What a chump.

Walsh now has written an entire new story on Armstrong. What a nutter!

But in what was supposed to be the Tour of Renewal the next year, with a biological passport system supposedly encouraging teams to abandon doping, Walsh became suspicious of Armstrong. After almost two years off the bike overcoming cancer. a rider who was never a great time trialler or mountain climber was suddenly dominating the race.

He won the first stage – a time trial. Then he streeted the field in a mountain stage, racing up the Col du Galibier so quickly that he had to use his brakes to slow down until it was time to break away.

"In the phrase of Chris O'Dowd in the film, he was a man transformed," Walsh says. "You had a question at that moment, 'do I believe this?' Lots of journalists felt 'I've got real scepticism here. I don't have any evidence but the world loves this story because it's so life-affirming that I've kind of got to go with it'."

More comedy from Walsh

"No, I never had any sense that Cadel Evans was doping," he says. "My belief in the Tour has been restored to a degree in that I think it's now possible to win the Tour de France clean.

"If somebody said, 'when did the cut-off point come and when did you start to believe it was possible?', it was that 2011 tour. That was a more human tour.

"I'm not saying for certain that the last five tours have been won by clean riders but my view is that they were clean."

Walsh gives no credence to accusations that Froome was doping when he won for the second time last year.

"People say Chris Froome has done the Col de la Madone, Lance's famous training mountain near Nice, faster than Lance. Well, [Australian rider] Richie Porte does it much faster than Froome. Does that mean Richie Porte is doping? No, it doesn't.

"The sport changes. These guys get lighter. On a climb like that, of course they can beat times previously.

"There are Australian swimmers who have set new world records that were previously held by Chinese swimmers. Does that mean the Australians were doping? No it doesn't. It's entirely natural that times are going to improve and the one who sets the new mark is not doping, even if the one who set the old mark was."

I was referring to the bolded part you referenced about the passport and the Galibier. That section was written by the author of the article.

But then of course you knew that.

I like how Walsh plays to the Aussie audience about Cadel just to talk up the film. Will probably bomb just like in the UK.

The Aussie Swimmers beating the Chinese cleans is just too funny. Walsh play it like a Las Vegas lounge singer.

I would really like to see clean person to beat Marita Koch and Jarmila Kratochvilova records

Only if they are Australian or British though....

I;m not sure what's worse - the nonsensical reason he gave for beating doped times or the fact that he played to the Oz audience and told them what they wanted to hear - all for the money. So if he's saying this for the money, what else will he say for the money...no in fairness to goner whilst he does defend walsh a lot, he also accepts there are obvious issues with what walsh says, but I am not sure even goner could defend the above.

Can someone explain to me how "these guys get lighter" differs from "these guys hematocrits increase" ?

To be fair on Walsh, the movie bombed so badly in the UK, I now think he's prepared to say anything in an attempt to claw back the losses.

So it is fair to say there will be a ****** of great David Walsh comedy books released around december 3th.

Unless he negotiated his fee as percentage of the gross, what sort of financial damage would the movie box failure do to Walsh anyway?

He tried to branch out to the more general public and failed, doubt that it would have an effect on his earning potential within the target market.

Walsh would be obligated to do a certain degree of promotion and marketing for his fee. It would be also suggested that the fee for he script would have been on a sliding scale based on the films success.

However, based on his last round of interviews I think even he has given up on the movie.

1) He didn't write the script;
2) Given the low percentage of scripts that ever get filmed, it would be a brave scriptwriter who accepted points.

As for the rights to Seven Deadly Sins: authors selling movie rights are usually paid a (very small) percentage of production budget (if the film gets made - otherwise all they ever see is the chump change from selling the option, as eg must have happened to Juliet Macur when her book was optioned but didn't get the greenlight).

(Also, do bear in mind the reason Frears didn't go ahead with his first choice, The Secret Race: Hamilton wanted too much money. It's highly unlikely he then turned around and threw a small fortune at Walsh.)
