You have to seize the moments. He would´ve lost anyway, but maybe he would´ve gained a stage and more time for his podium chances.

Terrible management by the UAE in the second week.

Stage 16 - the first real mountain stage and we saw his limits today. Impressive, considering he was supposed to be a domestique for Ayuso.

More likely he was not and we never found out simply because the route had not given us a mountain stage that seperates the best climbers from each other until stage 16.
It's clear the first real mountain stage was a bit too much for him, but it can still be true that he was the strongest in the first two weeks. I think he was. You're talking about the best climber in the race, clearly he's not.

Nah, come on. We both know something completely went wrong at UAE on the rest day.

I think Del Toro went too far to the left on the Contador-Froome scale of jersey defending, he should have gone at his own pace earlier, this way they still dropped him anyway and he blew up.

Nah.

I think Del Toro being really energetic and jumpy and explosive made people believe he was stronger than he actually was. The one short MTF he did get dropped by Ayuso himself.

It also explains why UAE has been racing this tentatively. Ayuso has been nursing injury, and they were unwilling to blindly back Del Toro because they didn't believe he was at that level.

Del Toro is still so young. Been riding really great considering this his first time riding for GC in a GT and getting into doing that by just being so good. He wasnt supposed to. Now he is up against seasoned and experienced riders here. GT-winners.

I hope he can hang in there and show good recovery. Would be very promising for the future if he can continue to defend himself and salvage a great result on GC. Whether it is win, podium or top 5.

Slewing him for dropping today is just crazy, but I guess thats only if you have an agenda. Anywho.

IMO he still has a realistic chance to win. This was the hardest day of this Giro and more importantly a MTF. Finestre is on paper the biggest challenge remaining but it is close to a unipuerto.

Never did I think we'd get to the point where people woudl say "Today was too hard, but Finestre is doable" stage.

Finestre will be almost a fresh 1 hour effort. Completely different from today's stage.
Will be 2300m or so altitude gain before. Not that fresh. And blaming fatigue is too easy when you drop 1'30 on a moderate HC climb. Which is more than in 2011, 2015 and 2018. Only in 2005 did they have slightly more altitude gain before Finestre, but there you had a false flat downhill of 40km going into the base, which makes it effectively a fresher effort than coming off a flat sprint into the base.

Even worse, today he had 0 teammates left once he got dropped.

In what world was this even a thing? Is the suggestion that there was some question about who leads UAE?

And now the guy leading the Giro is "dom" status? No top GC rider has ever lost time on a mountain stage?

I don't get it.

There were already predictions, on how del Toro will lead the Tour in two years time, Pogi i guess being considered too old. And *** like that. I know, strange things. On top of that it was presented, like del Toro didn't have an extreme amount of luck, so far, claims on how he is just a better GT rider, compared to lets say 5 time GT winner. But basically i have no beef with del Toro, i would even be OK with him winning this Giro. Read this more not as a dig against del Toro, but some of the hype surrounding it, by fans.

One is riding his first attempt at GC in a GT. Hoping to take it as far as he can. See how it goes.

Ah, well maybe better to address the comments to the actual posts where those assertions were made? Making it about Roglic somehow in the Del Toro thread seems a stretch?
