The most pressing question about Del Toro though has to be; why did he sniff Majka after the finish of stage 21?

That makes it three consecutive editions where teams / riders got it wrong and arguably lost the Giro because of their choices.
Finestre is the ultimate difference maker.
It's just perfect that in a sport where every coach is spouting "FTP doesn't matter only fatigue resistance dow" the perfect FTP climb is the greatest difference maker every time.

Contador won the Giro with a 2 minutes gap ( more than 3 to Landa) Landa would not win the Giro even if he attacked from the bottom.

But FTP changes between riders if the course is 150 km or 250. Absolute elevation counts differently over distances.

The contrived excuses just underline how much the pathetic loser is still underhated.

I have yet to be convinced Del Toro can put 2 and 2 together
Some of you guys are so harsh... Del Toro's brain hasn't fully developed yet and it's possible his balls haven't even dropped yet and you are already so demanding...

The adult brain doesn't fully develop until the mid 20s, so I'm giving Del Toro's some time to mature. If he doesn't start making smart decisions on his own by the age of 25 though then we know all hope is lost!🤣

If you are old enough to go to war and be responsible for any war crimes you commit, you are also old enough to be responsible for how you race your bike. He's an adult, not a kid.

I don't think of Del Toro as a kid, I think of him as a young adult. Granted, so far he doesn't appear to be the sharpest one, but like I mentioned prior I'm willing to give him some time to mature. Cause I'm nice like dat. :p

The stage where Carapaz took time on both Yates and Del Toro was sort of the reverse of the Finestre. Del Toro rode on Yates' wheel, and he looked quite at ease while doing so. But unlike Carapaz on Finestre, Yates was eventually able to get rid of Del Toro, who then dropped like a stone.

Ergo: maybe he wasn't all that comfortable as he would make it seem on Finestre either. And maybe we shouldn't blame him too much for not taking any initiative.

I, for one, have no intention of ever hating any rider. Some tactics may irritate or disappoint me, and occasionally a rider acts off the bike in ways I find distasteful, but to hate someone for the way he rides a bike? I just don't get that mindset at all.

I don’t think he was entirely out of gas either, but I think he was on the limit quite a bit, and couldn’t risk pacing Carapaz up the mountain.
Why not?
He absolutely should have risked everything trying to get 1st, even if there was a decent chance of dropping from 2nd to 3rd.

To quote a great philosopher: «We have to accept race tactics and race situations, but sometimes you also need the balls to race.»

This part I agree with, you need racing balls to win and Del Toro's winning racing balls haven't quite dropped yet. Hopefully they will sometime in the near future.

In retrospect, Carapaz biggest tactical mistake must have been overtaking Yates in GC with his late attacks in stages 17 and 19.

The year of unexpected, the movistar documentary series were showing everything not to do tactically. As a noob I learnt a ton from it that way. And I still can't believe UAE does all of their mistakes years after that show aired :eek::eek::joycat:

People say Del Toro is stupid. I don't see it. But UAE... I can't even fathom the level of stupidity!
