Isaac Del Toro thread

I will go with Bernal's assessment, as he was there, and on 15, Del Toro looked extremely good. He gains time, he has time to give. Instead, he has less time to give. Also, Ayuso should have been there to chase attacks in the end. I'm thinking of the Gee attack that caused Del Toro to have to respond, while Ayuso was sitting on his wheel.

I am not saying that he would have won the Giro there, I'm saying he has a minute more to lose now if he'd gone with Bernal.

And yes, Ayuso is acidic on team dynamics, becasue the only person's name he remembers is Ayuso.
Thanks, I just think the Stage 15 thing...I don't see how those 3 gain time over that course if they went alone, so I don't know if Del Toro has more time that day. Kinda doubt it. But I also don't think UAE were doing anything but keeping Ayuso in it. But I think that wasn't a bad thing necessarily.

Who would chase that group though (not 3 but 5, Gee and Arensman were also there)? Pellizzari for Roglic who was probably already feeling miserable on Grappa?
Other teams were out of domestiques and all riders in front had a satellite rider to use in the valley.

I can also see arguments both ways, but if UAE knew Ayuso was struggling they could probably took the risk and bet on Del Toro.

There's also a scenario where Del Toro follows Carapaz on stage 11 if he's free to do his own race. And again not many domestiques left to chase.

Not saying it was an easy situation for UAE to manage but they are the most dominant team in the world and yesterday was their worst day in a GT since forever. Some criticism is natural.

Love this kid! I still dont think he will win (think of Carapaz), but he's such a pure talent and already performing way above expectations so it's already a huge W. A special, special talent. Love to see it. He hasnt trained and adopted his body particular to win GT yet and when he does he will improve even more in mountains as well as getting stronger.

Both my guys which intrigues me before the Giro from this startlist, Del Toro and Vacek are performing very well, Del Toro obv next level.

Based on the interview from him and Majka I think it actually was out of luxury that he made the jump to that group rather late and stayed with Majka/Adam as long as possible.
He was dead last in the group... that was simply a bad place to be at that moment, unless you're not feeling too well.

Obviously this guy shines in almost every other aspect of GT riding, but the Finestre might still be his downfall. At this point it's him or Carapaz, and I think it's going to be Carapaz.

I also think it is going to be Carapaz, but I do not think that del Toro was actually worse then the other guys like Simon Yates, Gee etc. on mortirolo today.

I think UAE actually did good tactics today and told Del Toro that they could set the situation straight after Mortirolo so that Isaac did not have go go all out.

Very happy for him and about the fact that Carapaz will have too keep attacking. But I still think today if anything was confirmation he'll have a very hard time to win gc. On the HC climbs he just doesn't have it yet and there are 3 HC climbs on Friday before the HC climb to end all HC climbs on Saturday.

That's a fair assessment, although Carapaz was not as effective in his attack on the Motirolo today as he was yesterday on the penultamite climb and then Del Toro bounced back with conviction. True, we still have to see him get over the HC climbs on Friday and Saturday, however, Carapaz will start to feel the cumulative efforts of his attacks to crack the yound Mexican. The end of a Giro always comes down to who has more left in the tank, not absolute relative strengths.

Could also be him playing it cool and smart. Like you say he was dead last but what I think he meant is that he was stronger in that moment than he made out to look at that moment and im inclined to agree especially after he said so himself and his legs at the end didnt implie he was dead. Not saying he was strongest on mortirolo or anything like that, just that he wasnt as in big trouble as one coulda think.

Finestre is the name of the game not to hard before though so he might get in trouble if its paced hard enough on friday too on the first two hard climbs later on which I dont see any team have the strenght to do but riders if they have cojones to go for the hail marry. Lets see. Think Carapaz too.

But Del Toro already W performance and more than expected, looks stellar for the future as he only gets stronger.
That's not playing it cool. There was no way for him to move up. If he's feeling good, that's not the place to be.

And it's not a shame, it's only logical that the longer climbs in this final week aren't his strong suit. Otherwise he's already a kind of Pogacar, and two of them on one team is a bit too much (actually, one of them already is :))
