Pinot started his sprint early to prevent Ulissi from catching up. This cost him the win in the end, I believe.

1st victory for the French in the Tre Valli Varesine and this is a 1-2.

Gutted to miss this, but great to see that Pinot is on top form.

Why oh why are these races so underpromoted; I couldn't even find a stream. They rival the Ardennes week.

Strange considering he was so tired at Tour and his father said Movistar were racing him into the ground

Maybe he fancies his chances at Lombardia

Can he be starting early for next year ? ...I guess if he took August and half of September off ??

Nibali, Pinot, Alaphilippe, D. Martin, Uran.

Yep, those are the most probable, if it's raced hard, which is almost certain with such a strong TBM.
Nibali especially looks an absolute monster when going uphill, so it's my pick.

Quintana probably has to ride the Italian fall classics, simply because he's the only Movistar leader left.

Impressive victory by Geniez who not only duped Pinot & Nibali, but also Aru who wasn't able to close the gap Geniez was literally hammering down in the end.

I would add Fuglsang as a dark horse to the list of favorites. He ain't no major competitior on paper, but always performed well at the Italian fall classics during his early years.

Martin has visibly improved his climbing skills since then as well. But yeah, it's a bit like saying Zabel knows how to win the Amstel Gold Race 10 years ago.

Considering the race route has changed dramatically since then, the last statement is irrelevant.

Martin has visibly improved his climbing skills since then as well. But yeah, it's a bit like saying Zabel knows how to win the Amstel Gold Race 10 years ago.

Martin should obviously be considered one of the favourites, but regardless of whether he has won it or not with an attack on the flat after the climb to Bergamo Alta from a group of 10, because that bears no relevance to Sunday's race.

Lombardia is gonna be very simple. There's a maximum of 30 riders that reach the foot of the Civiglio the right group. Of those, only 15 will have something left. Nibali gonna go mayhem on the Civiglio. Then Nibali is gonna go mayhem on the descent of the Civiglio. Will be interesting to see who's still on the wheel then.

2015 scenario ? I like it !

Actually it could be a little better since TBM is very strong and gonna cause mayhem in the Muro di Sormano, but not as strong as Astana 2015 I think. Rosa closed all the attacks in the Civiglio.

And of course no Dani Moreno too.

I'm really surprised Ulissi did not beat all of them in the sprint. I guess he's the fastest of them but he lost his last drop of energy in the chase.

Ulissi had just done his max effort. He had no time to recover.

Ulissi had just done his max effort. He had no time to recover.

...and Pinot made sure that he wouldn't recover by launching his sprint early. It didn't pay off. Good for Alex tho. Big win. That's not good in the grand scheme of things, meaning the GDL. Nibali, if he had any doubt, knows that Thibaut is the better sprinter, that if it comes to them in the final stretch, he's doomed. So he'll try something else. The last descent.
