Not necessarily. How many different sports federations have had no doping enforcements, yet there are numerous visible doping effects? Too many to count.

Cycling is on the top of the 'worst offenders list.' Fair-shmair, it just is.

I too am waiting for the BioPassport lottery losers. I can't remember the last one for this year. Maybe Pat's list was scuttled because of the action in Italy. He's got some Italian bad guys now, right? Why not dust off their last positive? UCI's got an image to uphold.

Exactly. There must be a bus nearby that they can throw someone, anyone under.

True, but if I read RR's post correctly, the investigation is not directed against cyclists or cycling in particular, but against networks of PED-dealers. So how come that, again, we end up with a bunch of cyclists under suspition? Where are the footbalplayers?

I agree very much that football is dirty as hell, and dirtier than any of us can tell.
But I'm hypothesizing about a continuum here that goes from dirty (footbal/tennis), to dirtier (Spanish footbal/tennis;)), to dirtiest (cycling).

Ignatiev?

I'm pretty sure that Ignatiev has always been based in Italy--like most of the other guys from the original Tinkov set-up. Maybe he moved, though. I don't know.

Gusev? He was on Disco and Astana...

Isaichev has been living in Spain for a while, raced for Xacobeo for three years - Alvaro Pino territory too.

Karpets has his history with Caisse d'Epargne, and has only raced in Spain thus far this year. But then his performance has been pretty under the radar since his big years in '06-'07.

Kolobnev was connected to Jesús Losa at the end of '09, but nothing came of it.

Vorganov also spent a couple of years with Karpin and Xacobeo.

Markov and Petrov are no longer on the team but have raced for Spanish teams at some point in their careers. Markov's best year came while racing for Milaneza-Maia (later LA-MSS) too.

Gennady Mikhailov raced for Postal, Disco and Vino-era Astana before retiring with Katyusha.

The report said 5 Russian riders one of whom is not on the team:

Ivanov is an obvious charger (ie best form at 35 plus must be the Kloden plan)
Kolobnev and Karpets are also obvious.

So we are looking for 1 Russian ex Katusha rider and 1 Russian current Katusha rider.

Flip the Dealer?

Half of world class professional riders? A great physician-trainer always in the thick of it?

My initial thought would be Fuentes. Maybe he "flipped" last year during Galgo and was given a wire/phone tap to build evidence in a deal save his own a55.

Seems a longshot that they'd flip the dealer to get the users. Usually it's the other way around.

I wonder if some riders are going to think twice before riding in Italy as CONI seem to have indicated that they are having a massive crack down in conjunction with the police.

I suspect that the Giro line up will be a lot thinner come the start line.

nah, the riders are accustomed to aggressive Police Activity at the Giro.
Been happening for eons. What else is new lol.

The key is getting first floor rooms for the team hotel.

Did anybody say anywhere that only cyclists are involved?

It's not out of the ordinary that we only read about the cyclists. Puerto was also about other sports as was Conconi/Ferrari back in time - it just doesn't get any real attention in the press as it's pretty much only the cycling press who cares about the subject...

No one has mentioned Kyrienka(sp). Maybe not one of the more stellar riders but I have allways admired his guts so here's hoping he isn't the Russian living in Spain but not with Katusha.

According to Tuttobiciweb, the action involves 1000 police agents and those concentrating on the team have seized the medical records of five Russian riders living in Spain.

La Gazzetta dello Sport cites Katusha: "I militari si sono limitati a domandare i passaporti biologici di cinque corridori, uno dei quali non fa più parte della nostra squadra..." which means that carabinieri asked for biological passports of 5 riders, among which is one of a rider who is not with Katusha any more.

Doesn't say anything about Russians living in Spain.

BTW, the Gazzetta says in the same article that carabinieri searched Scarponi's room in a hotel near Etna. They found a common anti-inflammatory drug, milk powder and Enervit bars.

I don't think riders are stupid enough to keep stuff in hotel rooms anymore. It will be at another location close by or a non team car etc...in order to catch them 'red handed' you probably need 24hour surveillance. But then Riccó proved us wrong by allegedly transfusing at home..so maybe.

I wonder if all this activity is going to deter any of the Giro favourites from being in "optimal condition" come May.

I wonder is RCS Sport gonna do an ASO and ban any rider under investigation by CONI??

edit:was Petacchi under investigation last year and still rode, but had to quit early due to his bronchitis?

It's Egüés, not Euges. Should I write Katyusha about it?

Also, not sure what the Spaniards have to do with anything.
edit: also two, I thought there were more Katyushas living near Kolobnev.
