Jasper Philipsen was one of the stars of the 2023 Tour de France, winning four stages and the Green Jersey for the points classification. This success did not come without controversy however and the Belgian's partner has revealed some of the horrific messages he has received on social media.

“The messages Jasper has received are really not nice. Many people underestimate the mental impact of this,” laments a disgusted Melanie Peetermans to Vive le Vélo following the conclusion of the 2023 Tour de France. “Through social media he has received several death threats, then I wonder why. You don't even know him."

After 2 recent deaths in cycling, the idea that a cyclist should get death threats because of how he rode, is absolutely disgusting and abhorrent.

I do not like him, and think he is a douche extraordinaire, but death threats is taking cycling a bit too cereal...then again, I had someone threaten to kill me and sexually assault my wife on this forum, many years ago, so there are some cracked eggs around, for sure.

Even though most of Philipsen's wins were in second tier races, to get 19 in a single season is huge, I actually don't remember anyone in the World Tour or any of its predecessors getting so many wins in one year.

I've read he will target Paris Roubaix next year and after his performance in 2023, I wouldn't be surprised if he wins.

He must go for the Green Jersey at the Tour as well, which might be easier for him to win then P-R.

Kristoff with 20 in 2015. Four of them being WT (including one monument), in addition to some high level non-WT wins and several more WT podiums. The same year you also had Marko Kump on 21 victories, but that was one of his Adria Mobil farming years.

Before that, you had Sagan's 22 wins in 2013 (7 of them in the WT) and Cavendish with 19 the same year (7 + 1 TTT in the WT). Greipel equaled Philipsen with 19 in 2012, and he had 21 in 2010. Both Greipel (20) and Cav (23) surpassed 20 in 2009.

So while Philipsen's win count this year is impressive, it's very far from being unique.

Freddy Maertens got 44 in 1977.

Sounds like Philipsen wants to move -

“I told Alex Carrera (his manager ed.) that the next four or five years will be my best years,” said Philipsen in conversation with Het Laatste Nieuws. “I hope to find a team where I can get the best out of myself. That could also be in my current team. All options are open. I will look at the full picture and then decide.”

If he were to leave Alpecin-Deceuninck however, that would of course mean a split from his superstar teammate and close friend, Mathieu van der Poel. “It's nice to have good friends, but before I sign a new contract, I will have thought about myself first,” Philipsen concludes, determined to secure himself a team that can ensure his “potential is best achieved and where I can pursue my dreams."

Obviously don't really know the insights of his contract and the priorities within the team but from the outside I very much question which team would be better suited to "get the best out of him"?
All the bigger teams have GC guys which would be always ahead in the picking order for the Grand Tours and while MVDP is the clear leader in one day races being the second option to him is probably as good as it gets for races like PR.

This smells more of trying to leverage himself to get a better deal at Alpecin-Deceuninck. I mean, I'm sure there are teams out there that can offer him more money but that doesn't mean he'd be better off cycling wise.

Great win for Philipsen and continuing to show those who made fun of him in 2021 Tour wrong with his growth. MVDP and him are a deadly combo for the upcoming races and he can bag some more Tour wins.
