I agree, but then again I don't think there's an inalienable human right to choose your own career. Sometimes you're limited by your own competency, sometimes by the reality of the job market. Is the technologist who automates away the assembly line evil because he deprives manual laborers of a job, or forces them to learn a different trade? Let's not pretend that pro bike riders, even clean ones, are pursuing their career out of some higher nobility or as a service to mankind. They want fame, entertainment, and freedom from mental exertion.

p.s. it is annoying when you excuse immoral behavior by saying you have 6 kids and a wife. You should probably refrain from procreating so relentlessly if you don't have a legitimate way of providing for them.

I disagree. Voigt is a hero for many who offer the "clean era" theory, since many grew up as July fans and he is the hero of the July fans.

There are still loads of people who believe he is clean for some reason, probably because they like him and like with other dopers, those who believe in them tend to be fans who can't separate emotion from judgement.

Chapeau to Benson here, he played it well.

There are things Benson does that I don't agree with, but him I can respect far more than most others and often he does do the right thing.

I think he could have done better. It's easy to say so from this distance, but there was an opportunity there when Voigt tried to make parallels with journalism and Murdoch tabloid phone hacking.
Bensen should have said "The papers who participated in that were disgusting and taint journalism for the rest of us. I would never work for a Murdoch paper. Would you say the same thing about Bruyneel, Jens?"

Jens Voigt is a clown who gets way too much airtime.
When will he retire? Thats the important question or rather the answer is key.

But he has fans! The UCI/teams desperately want people like this around, so he'll hang around the sport no matter what.

Jens was working a dead end of an analogy with his reasoning. It wasn't as vigorous as fans believed in the comments. Still, entertaining though, which is why he has fans. He's fun to watch.

IMHO, Benson did a good job.

To ask Jens the following,

"Jens Would you work with a DS that has a deplorable doping history in the sport?"

The answer is "yes", Kim Andersen.

Andersen should've been given a lifetime ban from the sport. Yet he is the DS of Trek.

Voigt reminds me of a dog doing tricks in a circus at this point.

Why is good reasoning a requirement of being a good cyclist?

Cyclists need a union and to have their representatives talk for them.

Sure, whatever. Make it at least even with USA football, baseball and Euro soccer - and 70% of the Olympic sports. We are so far from truly regulating cheating in sports, cyclists, not unionized, are relatively defenseless. And, knowing how to talk, is, well, not a traditional part of being a pro cyclist.

I agree with this sure in the nba once your tested the 3rd or 4th time in a season you know you can't be tested again.

Meh, the Q&A was excellently handled by JV. Of course it's all a cartload of bovine-dung, but it covers all targets:

1. He is okay with digging into the past, is okay with us retesting his samples (if we really want)... and yet thinks we shouldn't retest samples.
2. Everything before 2006 is understandable (rough times etc.). Positives after Fuentes are bad as everyone knows better.
4. The current generation is clean. Because their young. And uhm... well they didn't cycle when Armstrong tested positive. Really, they are clean.
5. Dificult question (Do you think doping was endemic?): answer with a counterquestion and evade.
6. When the interviewer comes with really personal questions: JENS ATTACK! The attack was mindboggling but certainly strikes a cord with the public. And even though the interviewer imediately answered it, jens kept on attacking just to avoid answering the original question.

Jens really hit it out of the stadium there. Many riders could learn something from this old dog.

I think he is good and hard working rider but his self-aggrandizing is annoying and whenever I hear that stupid "shut up legs" I feel like throwing up.

I can't blame him. It's annoying, but it sells. He's a professional and just a medium talented cyclist. He needs to cash in (and it opens a spot for a future commentator career).

Absolutely. His current persona is the fault of his many fans, who decided to turn a marginally talented doofus domestique, whose claim to fame is idiotic breakaways that always fail, into some kind of hero.

Suddenly, he's Chuck Norris in lycra, and everyone jumped on the bandwagon, creating this cult of personality where there should not have been one.

There is nothing compelling about his riding style nor his personality. He's a lifelong jock. Riders like him aren't the most intellectually engaging people to interview, so it's no surprise his latest effort failed to please. It's because some of you expect way to much out of guys like Jens, and expect them to say what you want them to say instead of taking their opinions for what they are.

I am going to have to come up with a proper noun describing this kind of empty post from you, Zigmeister.

See it often: people who post short, snipey little posts sans explanation.

If you think running a stop sign costs someone else their job, or deprives them of income, you live in an entirely different environment to the one I do. I feel sorry for you, on many levels if that is the case.

Good. Plenty of people enjoy Froome killing everyone on the climbs and telling tales of parasites in the jungle.

Welcome to the club.

Yeah, not a fan of that. It's boring. It's ridiculous.

Jens is never boring. Jens struggles, Jens attacks, Jens fails and Jens sometimes wins. Then he talks that straight-up I-love-cycling-my-face-off talk in that Shprockets accent and I lap it up. Jens doesn't make up tropical diseases or tell me his dope was for his dog. Or Frank's. Jens says leave us alone and what do you expect–we have kids to feed.

The difference between myself and your imaginary club is that I don't think Jens is clean, I don't tell people Jens is clean, and I don't bludgeon logic and probability into a corner so I can live with the idea that Jens is clean.

I love cycling. Jens loves cycling. We all love cycling. I can't bring myself to get worked up about Jens. I guess I'm part of the problem.

Plenty of people gets excited about Froome killing everybody on the climbs. Horizontal or vertical really makes no difference.

I bet Froome loves this sport. He certainly appear happy when he crosses the line first.

Imo, Froome and Voigt are equal weights in this sport. Both pathetic.

One small difference being Jens (nor his fans) has never pretended to be anything he is not... certainly not the world's greatest ever cyclist...
