Well in theory it would allow you to be less “on your limit” at any given power output, which means more oxygen available for your brain which means better decision making and ability to focus. How much of a difference (if any) it ends up making in actual practice is hard to quantify, though.
Well, thanks a bunch for that very informative answer to my very serious question. I'll try that tomorrow on Roselend. ;)

There needs to be an eyeroll option in the "like" button. I find this sickening.

"Something around 97" says his father??? 97 is virtually the highest relative VO2 max ever recorded by any athlete -> VO2 max World Records. This is beyond Contador's performance on Verbier in 2009. Will be interesting if Lemond says anything? Poor Marco, his ADH record is on notice.

Why wasn't any of this mind blowing aerobic potential about Vingegaard made public prior to 2021 when he first appeared out of nowhere?

Yesterday I wrote I'd stop following cycling before Vingo won his 3rd Tour. I'll temper this prediction and just not bother watching any race Vingegaard competes at. This is just flipping the bird at the sport. Denmark should be embarrassed.
Healthy with a bit of skepticism. The insane VO2max however, seems to be accurate. Here's a Danish article from 2018 on the subject:

And you've all probably seen the video of a young JV smashing the Coll de Rates, if not, here it is:

P.s. - long time lurker as well. As this topic seems to be blowing up i'm jumping on the bandwagon.

I'll add that for the few I followed over the years I ended up on the sceptic side of the fence about motors, I might reconsider that perhaps because chaudière isn't even accurate anymore scale wise if we assume chemical / medical doping as an explanation for those spectacular displays of today.

As someone else noted already, Vinge's 'unmatched physical stats' meant he found a nice little job packing fish, i.e. which is obviously where all superhumans go when they're scouted as the next superstar of pro cycling. It makes total sense. Everyone knew he was a super talent.

In other news, according to French Eurosport, Vingegaard achieved the highest seconds per km gain since... 1962: https://www.eurosport.fr/cyclisme/t...secondes-par-kilometre_sto9707717/story.shtml

4,38 s/km, which is the highest since Federico Bahamontes achieved 4,96 s/km 61 years ago.

So, gentlemen (& ladies), what we just witnessed is a once-in-a-lifetime event. "How" it has come to pass in this modern pro cycling where levels are much more homogenous at the top & a certain professionalism is standard across the board (as is equipment), who knows.

But don't let anyone attempt to normalize what we just witnessed or handwave the difference, i.e. it's something hardly anyone has seen before in their lifetime of watching cycling.

And it's 4,38 s/km over Urshka Zigart's husband.
7.33 s/km over a journeyman called Van Aert isn't too shabby either.

JV found a guy who was willing to take all risks in the world and they succeeded together.

Grischa Niermann‘s Total Cycling Agenda is endangering Roglič‘s legacy. He is overdoing it. You need to be very concerned!

Dumoulin is on vive le velo... i just don't want to watch it anymore.

Belgium newspaper:

Zeven maanden voorbereiding en 100 gram bespaard waar je het nooit zou durven vermoeden: het geheim achter de tijdrit van Vingegaard.

The incredible performance brought to you by preparing 7month, saving 100gram and no bike change. Everyone is in overdrive to 'explain' this result with not even proper explanations.

It's really that insane, right ? Someone said in the thread it was beyond even Lance's circus and I was like "is it though ? Armstrong had some crazy climbs..." but the hard metrics are an outlier.

As I said, I grew pretty numb about doping. Sure Vingo & Pog were heads and shoulders above everyone in GC up that point but I suppose I can tolerate the kayfabe of two generational talents battling it out.
