Teams & Riders Jonas Vingegaard thread: Love in Iberia

From the moment Visma overestimated the strength of their own riders I think it's safe to say their plan sucked. It fell apart almost immediately. It wasn't a case of "oh dear, there's nothing we could do". No, these guys literally attacked day after day since the start of the Tour with a campaign of 'harassment' that seems to have simply fatigued their domestiques.

As for the talk here of who numero two in the world is... there isn't one. There's just Pog and then everyone else, with various specialists who feature in the Pog highlights reel depending on the event (like Vinge in the TdF). It's also cyclical and timestamped in the sense Vinge is no longer beating Pog and he's going backwards compared to his level from a year ago. It matters.

The thing about Van der Poel is on his own preferred terrain he still beats Pog (Roubaix and San Remo basically), at least for the time being. Maybe that'll change next year.
This. Who is rated behind Pogacar is kind of irrelevant.

The question that begs to be asked, why are Visma fans not critisizing Niermann? He is incapable of adapting and improving. He is running the 2022-23 gameplan thinking it will work and now it has failed Jonas back 2 back Tours. Even worse in 2025 where the entire Visma squad have been terrible so far in the Tour. We are 15 stages deep and we have yet to see Kuss or Jorgenson do a pull.

Jonas is a nice kid, but its hard for me to understand Danes cheering for him with the amount of chauvinism going on at TV2 in particular. Todays situation was a storm in a teacup, and thats everything they can talk about.

And Moberg is just a terrible, terrible analyst IMO.

Don't they critisize Niermann (and the tactics). Visma could do everything back when Jonas and Wout where the best in the world - at that time they could go after stages and the overall win.

Now they should probably focus on either the one or the other thing. Todays stage would seem like it's a divided team and they really don't want to work for a common goal.
The critic from Vingegaards wife came at a bad time and maybe it have fuelled the divided team - but it could also be seen as a way to try and fix the problems before the tour.

Anyways - maybe it's time for Visma and Vingegaard to part ways. I'm sure there will be other teams like Ineos who would focus 100 % on him.

Maybe he could go to UAE

Vingegaard is doing well, but Pogacar has just improved more than Vingegaard has done - in the last two years. Also, it is possible that the terrible crash that Vingegaard had in 2024 could have weakened him a little bit also on the long run, especially psycologically. For example on the downhills he seems a little bit more cautious now and also the fact that his family is starting to complain about him doing too much altitude training instead of just letting him stay at home to train in Denmark, could be a sign of Vingegaard starting to lose a bit of motivation and giving more priority to his family instead of giving 100 percent on the bike.

I have the feeling that Vingegaard will do maybe two seasons more and then he will quit.

He should target, and win, Giro / Vuelta next year. Don't think Pogi will race them. Then he could retire.

The one thing I noticed, Pog is really dam tired and we saw it on stage 14. Pog even said he almost cracked on the TT. Jonas is recovering better and looking fresher. I don’t think it will be enough to matter, after the rest day Pog will have recuperated enough to defend in week 3. But who knows, we could have some nice races ahead.

Hopefully Jonas keeps fighting, maybe nab a stage win or two.
I wrote this after the first rest day:

Looked again at the key moments of the last few stages after the TT. Vingegaard looks incredibly fresh while Pogacar is looking bit less sparky. I think JV will win the tour honestly. Visma-lab are riding with incredible confidence also. Reminds me of 23 tour.

Look at their eyes after the stages in the interview. I really believe Pog is not so good right now. Even Remco looks much fresher imo.

Aged like a banana peel in the 2nd week...

Media are just terrible. The title is not what Vingegaard said. In fact, he agrees with Pogacar.

”I think he's criticizing my team more than me. I was alone for a moment after the crash, and I think the sports directors should have sent one or two riders back from the breakaway group. But we'll talk about that later".

Wow, twisting his words like that for a clickbait-title is just really shameful.

Cyclinguptodate is not a serious website. They're literally just clickbait. Their translations are also always really really poor, and then they pick the most egregiously translated bit as their title.

I agree. I think it would be great to him to have all the three Grand Tours and in my opinion, as you say, he should try to focus more on the Giro and the Vuelta. Maybe the Vuelta already this year. I would also like to see him take part in Liege-Bastogne-Liege or Il Lombardia, where I think he has a decent chance to get at least on the podium - even though winning will still be extremely difficult.

Of course I understand why he mainly has focused on the Tour. But now where it seems more and more hard for him to win it again, maybe his focus should change. He already has TWO Tour de France victories, but still no Giro or Vuelta (or Monument).

Honestly, relying on media translations is bad for everyone involved. A lot of trash websites out there just living on the clickbait economy to get eyeballs. I treat them with the same disdain as these incessant "This weird trick" ads. The thing is, it's ubiquitous, and not just in sports media. Saying or doing stupid stuff to create controversy is the way to get attention these days.

I think the next few stages are very important psychologically for him and for the future of this duel.
If he isn't able to drop Pogacar it will look like a mission impossible for the future.
If he, however, manages to drop him, even if he loses the Tour by 4 minutes, that would be a big mental boost for him before the Vuelta and for 2026 eventually.
