He's such a boring rider, but there was no reason for him to ride. Don't understand why he didn't just do nothing in the wheel of Evenepoel. Tactically it made even less sense to just do a couple of turns.

I don't even know why he chased Remco and covered his move. Just let him do a suicide ride, Visma, UAE, Q36.5 and every sprinter team at least would be chasing, no way they're not catching him

Remco has dropped the peloton before, so when he goes you must follow.

Following Evenepoel was 100% logical.
His teammates were probably spent. UAE (whenever they catch) would be half dead. Evenepoel would probably gain 20-30 seconds alone (not that it would matter overall, but yeah).

oh, absolutely, when Remco went, the Visma guys were already deep in the red and unable to close a small gap.
If Vingo the him go, there was a risk that they wouldn't see him again and that Jonas would end up doing 20 k ITT vs. Remco in front.

Yes if Vingo let him go, maybe Visma, Trek and a few others would control and reel Remco in eventually. Or at least limit time loss to few seconds, but why take that risk?

Closing the gap could potentially get Remco to sit up and the front group could return to gaining time on the chase.

And Vingegaard could get very lucky and get a cheap stage win if Remco did a lot more of the work

Absolutely. Ultimately with the position he was in, I think Vingegaard had a reasonably good chance to win the stage had Evenepoel not crashed.
Of course, a lot of people would be outraged if that happened.

we were talking about positioning ( so only relevant before it split )

vingegaard did most of it on his own with his helpers behind him

he is very alert and dont need an armchair ride by teammates to stay in front when it matters
