Teams & Riders Jonas Vingegaard thread: Love in Iberia

While there are some fair explanations for Vingegaard's weak performance in France, he did do something quite inexcusable which was to put in an enduring ride the day before the RR. As he said before the race: "What I'm hearing is that many actually train quite hard the day before a one-day race. Now I've tried training a little harder than I have done other times, and we'll see if it works." He explained that Skjelmose - among others - advised him to do so.

Now, I wouldn't take advice from a guy like Skjelmose in general. But even so, why would you do something like that when you know that your body is tired and you're running on fumes? And why didn't the team manager stop this amateurish approach?

Maybe that was Skjelmose's plan:
"Jonas, just do this thing!"
"Oh... Jonas is out? What a shame... whelp... guess I'm the sole captain now..."

Criticising Vingegaard after the EC is fair enough, but I'm not sure I would have done it if I were an ex-rider known for not being a great one-day racer or team player nor for being in good shape outside of my seasonal goals and have had a terrible relationship with the same national federation.

Even though I dislike a few ex-riders on their personality or their words on fields not expert in, IMO that don't automatically disqualify some of their takes.
And here I must say I agree on every word from MR.
Besides, the story here about Skjelmose's advice to Jonas pre-race - is that for real?
I know the world of focussed training and substances have changed over time, but in amateur clubs as mine it has been school yard basics thst you don't push your limits the day before you enter the start line of a huge performance, and especially not if you've been away from your bike.
Speechless.
