I don't get why he is viewed subhuman by the UCI when other "former" dopers Hejsedal and Valverde get the royal treatment.

He is a small fish who thought he was a big fish. Small fish gets signed by a team who already have too many big fish looking to eat others, UCI have to keep control of how many fish are in the tank. If this small fish is great at responding to basic fish food, imagine what he would be like on super duper fish food the big team can afford. Too many big fish fighting.

This was a special time. Remember that McQuaid was fighting to stay in office at the time and we now know for sure Cookson was looking to rid the federation of Verbruggen as well. That's one possibility.
The UCI typically picks athletes who cannot afford a rigorous defense, or perhaps cannot afford bribes to make the case go away. JTL was a perfect fit. Why they would choose a Sky rider instead of the usual Pro Continental that barely leaves a country, I don't know.
And yes, the UCI "likes" some riders and not others for no reasons understood from the outside. Riders get banned from the WT all the time. What happened to FuYu Li? Francisco Mancebo? Meanwhile, Contador is clearly favored by the federation.
What we know for sure is there is way more going on than just a positive test. Even then, this point we know samples are swapped (Russian IAAF controversy) and tests are manipulated to get the desired results. (Landis)
So, yeah. "their sport" is how it is operated. Who is the they though? No idea.

I'm fairly confident that if Sky had wanted to continue (over-)paying the non-performing JTL then his infraction would have gone away

Its funnier than that (he said with hazy memory), in order to get the maths to work in terms of dehydration then he didn't drink at all (i.e. water) on the Friday. I could have just about bought the piss up if he had DNF'd or finished 20 mins down...but to not drink at all the next day after 33 units and then pull off a blinder in the lead group at the fnale of the worlds..LOLZ

So he wants to go into coaching? Who wants to get coaching advice from someone who was clearly rubbish when he was off the sauce? Nutrition advice from someone who's 15kg overweight? Or even doping advice from someone who posted a 155.8 off-score? Even old man Horner was able to keep his under 115 as he floated up Angliru.
