Junior racing - The stars of the future

Who will be the best juniors in 2013?

The Danish guys always seem to do good in the juniors and they got some good names for next year aswell.

Pedersen and Eg will probably have good rides in 2013. Other names that could feature in 2013: Van der Poel, Burton, Van Hooydonck, Curran.

Who am I fogetting?

Mathias krigbaum will be a beast in the tt's.

There's also Casper pedersen who will ride his first year as junior. This year he won the national championships in both tt and road race in u17 and got third in the junior road race, being the only one able to follow some of the strong roskilde-junior guys :)

Krigbaum will indeed probably have the best chances on becomming world champion in the TT. Although I think he has an advantage on a lot of the other guys the way he is build, I think he is a little further then most guys so im not sure about his future potential.

Havent heared of Casper Pedersen yet but he surely sounds like a talent. What are his strong points? As you said he can time trial, and what kinda stage was the road race? Hills?

Next year look out for Jack Edwards. The guy is a first year U19 rider - and generally a pursuiter/points racer, but then turned around and won the NSW State Kieren title...He also looked great in the NSW Criterium series recently - against guys like Sutton and Matthews, and he's only 16.

Good allround, too big to be climber, but Quite explosive and decent at hills. Good engine.
The course was the most hilly in the danish championships ever i think and it rained a lot.

He is also very good on the track.

Apparently Oskar Svendsen (World Junior TT Champion) has the highest ever recorded VO2 max - 97.5 ml/kg/min.

Are they serious about the GT winner stuff? I remember from another thread that he weighs 75 kgs or more. He could be a classics rider, not a GT contender, crazy Norwegians. :p VO2 max doesn't give a very clear indication of potential, he still has to progress a lot to be competitive in pro races.

Well, he's not exactly fat either. But he's really tall, which is why he weighs around 75 kg (probably a bit less). VO2 max isn't everything, but he also has a very high FTP of around 450 watt or so. And he only started cycling 3 years ago, before that he was an alpine skier...

Anyway, I think he's u23 next year? Junior is only for 17/18 year old's isn't it?

The thing is usually riders tend to get heavier muscles, as they progress. I expect him to become heavier the next few years, probably close to 80 kgs.
For example, Lars Boom weighed around 70, 71 kgs when he was a junior WC in cyclocross at 17 years. Now he's listed as being 78-80 kilos,
which means he gained 7-9 kgs over the past 10 years. He went from being a lanky stage racer in the U23 to a heavy prologue and classics specialists in the pro ranks.
Still it depends individually per rider, of course.

On the other hand, EBH for example went from being 78-79 kg's as u23 to 73 kg's after a year at Sky. However, unlike EBH, Svendsen doesn't appear to have much excess fat to lose to be honest. So yeah, he might be too heavy to be a GT contender, but I wouldn't rule him out.

l'Avenir will be his main goal next year, will be interesting to see if he can climb.

There are so many interesting names to follow in the coming season.

A few names I am particularly looking forward to follow though.

Riccardo Minali. I think he will have an excellent 2013 campaign. Son of the former Gewiss - Ballan sprinter Nicola Minali.

Enric Mas Nicolau. It will be interesting to follow him within A. Contadors new junior project! Good prospect.

Elie Gesbert. Super-talent. So much power in that tiny frame of his!

Ben Perry just signed to Lotto U23 team

Was just talking with friends about this very topic other night who we should expect to break out on the tour in 2013.

Going cover a series of young talents to follow in 2013 ,first one is up on my blog

but going back to the topic of juniors its so hard to know, i like riders who have had another focus than just cycling honestly you want someone who is knocking on the door and shows glimpses, anyone peaking at 18 is not going make it in pro ranks

its not easy for young lads coming in way tour is at moment pressure to earn points over working for team got get balance right.

the juniors don't mean much. especially teh danes are always a joke. they dominate as juniors because they live as pro's already and then as pro's they suck massively: lund, pedersen, berendt hansen, steensen. etc etc etc

Just a week till 2013 kicks off, see how the juniors go during season too

He will be riding with the pro's in Bay Classic hopefully he gets a chance to do a sprint for himself. But he is in the team with Cantwell and Ewan so he might have domestic duties.

Saw he had very impresive results on the track lately in the U19 category as a 16 year old. Hopefully he will be doing some riding in Europe the upcomming season as Ewan did this season.
