I'm not sure why Aschenden would have been so under informed. I can tell you with absolute certainty that WADA was well aware of micro dosing and IV EPO use in 2003. It took some time to perfect new testing methods and timing protocols after this info was given to them, so there would be a lag. But Aschenden not knowing about this in 2010 is very odd.

No, I don't think there is such a thing that is evading the testers, RIGHT NOW. that doesn't mean in 2 yrs time that won't change. It just means that 2012 was a good year for anti-doping in cycling.

Hushovd out? ;)

Good to see JV keeps coming back with honesty and humour.

One question that has been irritating me all day, and please anybody feel free to answer if you know, but how on earth should I pronounce Vaughters?

Is Vorters, Voters, Vogters, Vafters, other? I always assumed Vorters, but...

Thanks

I believe it rhymes (mostly) with otters. Does that help? Also think of the sound first syllable in "water". At least that's how it reads in English. If he uses some old world pronunciation then I don't know what it would be.

I heard JV using the word "bloodbag(s)" two or three times, in a context of microdoping/dosing.
wouldn't the old school bloodbags be a bit too big for microdooping?
does anybody know with what type of holders/machinery the microdopers go to work?

JV, what is the best way of getting rid of wasp sting marks? I got stung about 4 weeks ago and still have a fairly large red lump on my arm where the lovely wasp entered me.

By the way, I love your posts on here. Some of the theories on here are completely ridiculous and unfounded (as you have indicated), but I massively admire you for engaging.

+100 or whatever the obsessives say.

Hi JV,

Thank you for continuing to post. I would guess even your staunchest critic appreciates your continued presence.

In providing support for Paul, you have only enhanced your, and for that matter, Paul's credibility.

Chapeau Mr Vaughters!

ps

may your continuing work be not a rough ride

JV is indeed a masochist

One question. We are all aware of the changes in blood values in the 3rd week of a GT. Do you think these changes should be more extreme for a rider fighting for the win, going full gas on the climbs, hammering the TT versus a guy riding in the grupetto?

JV

I for one am very glad these discussions are on a forum everyone can see and not just between yourself and 1 other.

I might be a bit sceptical about what people with vested interests say but I would like to add my vote of thanks for continuing posting here. You must have a very thick skin as well as a lot of perseverance.

I think there might be many more people like me who read a lot of this but don't post much.

***EDIT!*** - seems that there are a significant number of questions here with explicit answers now in the 200 page USADA document (e.g. I very much recommend that you check out http://cyclinginvestigation.usada.org/ with all the official details). At some point, I plan to edit out the questions which are now explicitly answered in this report (and maybe eventually think of a few extra triggered by this report...). But for now, I'm just way too busy - apologies! Not that it should stop all of you in the 'clinic' from carrying on with it all!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update - I finally rationalised and made (possibly?) somewhat more coherent the questions I started this thread with, plus added a few. Kudos to JV if he has the time to turn up!

Questions for JV1973 part 2

Your Own Doping etc. etc.
Why on earth did it take 3 years to write that Op-Ed in the NYT? Was most of that just waiting for the right time? For yourself or for the antidoping politics etc., or so not to harm slipstream?
How did you get the EPO for CA doping?
Which episode of doping did you feel the worst about? My guess is CA, since that is what led you to retire and (particularly) since at the time you did it (completely??) independently, when you didn‘t need to?
When did you tell your parents & how did they feel? How did you feel?
According to Tyler’s book, you told the CA doctors openly and honestly about your doping before even signing a contract. Did you not ever consider that this might harm your career etc., or even prevent you finding a contract at all? What was your thinking behind it? Was it a personal desire for honesty, or something bigger? Did you talk much individually with Roger Legeay about it? Did he talk at all to you about his amphetamines bust?
Obviously you regret it, but do you feel ashamed and/or guilty of your doping? Why/why not? My guess is that you felt guilty/wrong but not ashamed.
Why did you only mention/hint-at UPS doping for quite a while & not even hint at your Opus-Dei/CA doping?
When is the ‘tell-all’ book coming out? Will you mention every person/name who was involved?
When exactly did you finally give up doping? Did you vacillate back and forth many times?
Did you ever consider just never telling anyone about your doping? I remember your comments about how no-one wants every single detail of every mistake or everything someone has done wrong to be broadcast to all their friends, family and colleagues.
Were you ever scared/ashamed/uncomfortable of people finding out? How did this (presumably) change over time?
Do you ever feel hypocritical, especially whilst mentoring a clean youth team before you ‘came clean’ to them yourself (or did you just give them the heads-up right from the word go)?
Was the doping just in the top rungs of UPS? Were you motivated by trying to make the tour team?
Any more thoughts on transfusions? What if you had a competent doctor you felt safe with?
With all your anti-doping work and the flack you get relating to it, how do you cope with the pressure from the press and fans? Is it your family that helps?
How much reading of doping science did you do whilst doping/considering? Was this motivated by safety, performance or both?
Was it a relief to come out about doping, or just no big deal in the end since your friends/family/colleagues all knew anyway?
What, if anything, did you use apart from EPO?
Were you scared of the dope? Physically?
Have you ever made individual apologies to riders you have wronged e.g. Bassons, e.g. David Moncoutie (who came in the top 10 in the TdF on Alpe de Huez, which you won in the Dauphine?).
Was it harder telling the public, or those close to you?
You mentioned on the cycling news forums that you have been honest about your ‘colourful past’ to anyone who has asked. When did you 1st start talking to the authorities, and 1st start talking (off the record) to the media, in addition to your friends/family/colleagues?
Did you dope on Comptel?
How much do you wish you had at least one time been there to ride down the Champs-Elysees? (The Elysian Fields). Do you envy your riders for that?
Ever thought of a riding comeback? It’s not too late at 39... Hell, Jens is 40 and has signed for another year. Do you do many training rides nowadays with your team?

Outing the UPS 3
Why was it no big deal outing the UPS3? How so casual/spontaneous?
It’s said that TD did some pretty hardcore doping. Is this true? How did this affect your hiring vetting/policy? I.e. that it was (reportedly) pretty hardcore?
Why did the ‘Postal 5’ withdraw themselves from selection from the 2012 Olympics? Fear of backlash when their testimony comes out, or a genuine desire to leave the glory to the clean guys? They all said that it was an individual decision, I think. But did they in fact make an agreement between themselves? Whose idea was it?? I recall that they made various half-hearted excuses…
Did you regret accidentally outing the ‘Garmin 3’ in the forum discussion on JJ, now that you know they are happy about the revelation?
Was outing the ‘Postal 3’ really an ‘accident’? I do admit that I’m a teensy bit suspicious. It does in fact seem like it might make it easier for them all in the long-run, and maybe that was on your mind?

Science of Doping
Did you find it interesting reading up on the science of doping?
Ullrich - would he have won without drugs? (I like him btw). He had a very muscley build, and apparently EPO helps the heavier riders more (witness the descent of the tiny Columbian climbers). Would Ullrich have been the top cyclist without doping?, as Willy Voet seems to think? (Compare also Indurain, as someone who would have benefited disproportionately from EPO - both had larger/musclier builds).
Any opinions on why transfusions weren’t used so much during the late 80’s, since they would surely give a massive advantage? Does Kimmage have an opinion on this?

David Millar etc.
David Millar - how open was he with you? Did he tell you about others, privately, if indeed this is a question you can answer?
Would you have taken on David Millar as co-owner if he hadn’t have been a doper?
Did you help Dave financially when he was in all sorts of legal trouble (read a couple of unsubstantiated rumours in the clinic)? Simply a friend in need?

Doping Strategies etc.
Do you ever use beet juice as a useful enhancer? Do you know much about the studies on this?
What is your opinion on caffeine as a completely legal enhancer. Do you use caffeine on Garmin?
There are scientific studies where it appears that use of simple paracetemol enhances exercise performance, presumably through reduced perception of pain (e.g. see http://jap.physiology.org/content/108/1/98.full where 13 trained male cyclists are studied). I assume that this would be completely legal. Is this something you are aware of, and would you ever consider using paracetemol on your team? Might it have less effect on pros who are presumably more highly trained to cycle through pain than the general athlete?
Any opinion on AICAR & hematite? Alas undetectable, and Pierre de Boudry has expressed worries.
Do PEDs retain any long-lasting effects, after one has stopped taking them?

Your Approach to the Media

Doubletalk (I.e. hinting at stuff but never explicitly admitting it). Did you enjoy it, apart from practicalities? I can see how it makes you feel one of the ‘in-crowd’…
How much did you tell Paul Kimmage apart from the public record & what gave you to trust him?

You, Frankie and the ‘hot-sauce’ IM
Were you indeed the anonymous guy with Frankie Andreu in Juliet Macur‘s article?
What were your feelings when the ‘hot-sauce’ IM came out?
Will you give a full interview anytime with Kimmage and/or Macur? Why did you choose to speak to Juliet Macur? Did the timing of your (presumed…) admission to Juliet Macur have anything to do with the publication of the ‘hot-sauce’ IM? (Sorry, I don’t remember the exact order of events).
In USPS, did you talk much with Frankie, KL, others, re. Doping/EPO at the time? Did you influence each other re. Whether to dope? Did you talk much afterwards?
In an article at http://www.scribd.com/doc/34168878/In-Armstrong-s-World-Fear-Paranoia-Prevail , it claims that Frankie Andreu was asked by Armstrong Associates to sign a statement denying material in L.A. Confidential. Apparently this occurred at the 2004 Tour. This is something I haven’t heard before. Is it true? (Dunno why it hasn’t been published more widely, if it is true?).
Feel able to comment more explicitly on the ‘hot-sauce’ IM now that a certain lawyer-happy & testicularly-challenged Texan has been prosecuted by USADA? Did some of the info on Floyd come from Allen Lim (and if so, did this cause any concerns for you in hiring him?)?
Was Frankie ever ****ed off with Betsy for releasing the IM?
Why did Frankie get dropped as DS at USPS after only a couple of seasons? Non-tolerance of doping? Power-play by LA & associates?

Your Anti-Doping Career and its Precedents
If you had not doped you would not now be an anti-doping team manager - what would be your choice?
When is the ‘tell-all’ book coming out? Will you mention every person/name who was involved?
Did Roger Legeay talk much with CA riders about his amphetamines bust? How did it influence his anti-doping attitude? Any idea how clean CA was before Festina?

Next bit (post was too long to fit into one):

Garmin Recruiting Philosophy
Did you ever consider recruiting David Moncutie to Garmin? Would he have been be a good fit personality-wise?
You ask riders on your team to come completely clean re. Past doping. Is this a matter of honesty, assessing them psychologically, or assessing clean riding ability? Do you similarly vet doctors - and do you do that yourself or leave it to Prentice? Seems that there has been some criticism re. Allen Lim & San Millan.
Ever consider David Clinger? Too much of a loose cannon?? Kayle Leogrande? Joe Papp? Sinkewitz? Has Basso been open enough for you to consider him, with his ‘only attempted to dope’ claims?
Apparently Jonny Weltz used to deliver white paper bags with EPO to Hincapie - see claims by Tyler Hamilton in his book ‘The Secret Race’. Any opinion?
Are there any doctors, physiologists on the team who have been involved in doping prior to coming to Garmin?

Clean Slipstream Recruits
Did you ever consider re-engaging with Thomas Dekker after he’d cleaned up and before his bust?
Did David Millar mentor or advise Thomas Dekker at all regarding his return as a clean cyclist? Has David been talking to DZ, VdV & TD about what to say after you ‘accidentally’ outed them. Has Dekker been giving them advice?

Progress in (Anti-)Doping
Michael Ashenden told cycling news that he believes that there are still “there are pockets of organised, highly sophisticated dopers even within ‘new age’ cycling teams”. Do you have an opinion on this? Would you necessarily be able to tell if this is going on at all at Garmin?
Do you ever minimize the amount/scale of doping going on to your cyclists, so that they do not lose confidence in their ability to compete?

Putting Together Garmin

Did you really want to ask Prentice Steffen to resign from TIAA-CREF after he talked about Hamilton & Jemison‘s request for doping? Was Prentice de facto on-board with his ‘sacking’? Presumably you feared the effect of LA’s PR machine on your new team - ‘I’m resigning because I don’t want to spoil the dreams of these young riders’ seems like a bit of a whitewash…
It has been said that the Trent Lowe affair was ‘Ugly’ (e.g. by bikezilla). Any comments?
You worked with the institute of cycling integrity project which involved Frankie Andreu? Why have Garmin not worked with Frankie in an official kind of way? He seems like a natural fit?
You state that sanctioned dopers should spend 1-2 years on a Conti team before rejoining the protour. Is this the same or different depending on if they are caught vs. un-caught? Why the difference? Is it whether the rider can take the doping-shame on a mental level, or rather something physical?
Dekker only did a few months on a continental team before joining the Garmin protour team - how do you reconcile this with the above?
Have you found a replacement for Lim’s input? What were his craziest/off-the-wall ideas?
(Hmmm - will you ever be - “wearing a diaper like Dave Zabriskie suggests? Comment - JV (Laughs) 'Cause you don't have to stop and pee while you're directing?”. This is strictly an amusing aside…)
Are you worried about getting banned yourself now, what with all the USADA proceedings?
How much does the ‘team before individual’ ethos deter doping? Is this a contributing factor towards your pushing that ethos?

Future Actions in Anti-Doping
Do you have leadership aspirations for the leadership of cycling? (My impression is that running a team,
where you can push the science, has more appeal to you?)
Any news on the potential amnesty or the truth/reconciliation proceedings? Will you be pushing for this via the AIGCP?
Do you think that doping should be criminalized in law, or is regulation by the sporting authorities sufficient? Should dopers (or possibly just doctors, DS, facilitators etc.) risk doing jail time (and being, as you once so quaintly put it ‘the girlfriend of some gendarme’?)

Opening up about Doping in the Future
Will you give a full interview anytime with Kimmage and/or Macur? Why did you choose to speak to Juliet Macur? Did the timing of your (presumed…) admission to Juliet Macur have anything to do with the publication of the ‘hot-sauce’ IM? (Sorry, I don’t remember the exact order of events).
When is the ‘tell-all’ book coming out? Will you mention every person/name who was involved?
Do you correspond much with the (most excellent!) ‘sports scientists’ blog? Fancy doing an interview with them any time?
Why do you recommend that dopers who are caught only give out information about themselves; not to name anyone else? Does this vary according to whether it is media/public/fans/authorities? Is your stance to do with legal/libel, or since it might harm someone’s career if they are still actice as a rider/DS?
If there is an amnesty, will you expect/recquire slipstream riders to come clean, or do you think that it’s their choice?

Running a Clean Team
How did you feel mentoring a clean youth team before you ‘came clean’ to them yourself? (Or did you indeed come completely clean from the start?)
Do you ever feel hypocritical running ‘clean teams‘?
Now that you have inherited a women’s team from Cervelo test-team, any opinions on doping in the women’s peloton? Do you think this is influenced by the (scandalous) lack of money in women’s pro-cycling?
How did the Garmin sponsoring company react to the revelations re. Garmin riders during the USADA investigaton? Was there any chance of them withdrawing sponsorship etc.?
During the Santa Clara/opus Dei races, you were always time-trialling out at the back. Did this ever have any influence on the Garmin TTTs, or your enthusiasm for them?
How much does the ‘team before individual’ ethos deter doping? Is this a contributing factor towards your pushing that ethos?

Hiring etc.
Do you ever actively hire ex-dopers? Good value for money, since they’re ‘tarnished’, especially with your mid-tier budget?
Would you ever have considered hiring Floyd? Bit of a loose cannon?? And what about tensions within the team, e.g. DZ (after Floyd outed him as a doper - his former friend)? Did Floyd deserve to be allowed back? When Floyd asked you for a job, you said ‘I can’t’. Why ‘couldn’t’ you?
Do you miss Wiggo?
Why didn’t you employ Floyd after he came clean? Too much of a loose cannon, or politically too risky to **** off LA?
Ever consider David Clinger? Too much of a loose cannon?? Kayle Leogrande? Joe Papp? Sinkewitz? Has Basso been open enough for you to consider him, with his ‘only attempted to dope’ claims?

You, the Authorities and the USADA Investigation
Were you annoyed with the timing of Floyd’s revelations, coming when (I think?) DZ was leading the ToC? IIRC correctly, Millar said that the resultant USADA investigation was one of the best things to happen to cycling. At least it wasn’t during the TdF…
Able to give any updates on when/if the USADA testimony will be released?
Any opinion on the BOA Olympic ban?
Able to give any updates on when/if the USADA testimony will be released?
Which angers you most about LA - his drug use, his refusal to come clean, the way he treated people personally (bullying etc.) or the way he held back clean sport?

Hypothetical Responses to Doping at Garmin
If a rider doped whilst on Garmin, would you ever consider re-hiring them clean after their suspension? Would you be able to re-establish trust?
If you find that a rider lied to you during contract negotiations regarding the nature/extent of their doping, would you fire them?
How would you approach it if a rider on your team doped? How much time would you spend looking after them, checking they’re OK etc. How much effort would you spend on helping them find a new job? Would you feel it as a personal failure on your part? What would you say to them?
If one of your cyclists admitted doping privately to you whilst on Garmin, would you inform WADA, or just quietly keep them out of races?
What would be your response if a rider tested positive for a recreational (non-performance-enhancing) drug? Would they get the sack?
If you find that a rider lied to you during contract negotiations regarding the nature/extent of their doping, would you fire them?

You ‘n’ Floyd
Have you spoken at all to Floyd after his revelations? Do you hope to? Will DZ get back in touch with him?

(-Argyle_Fan)

Part 3:

Gossip, Rumour and Speculation
Wasp sting - LA named in Guardian article (Aug 26th 2012). Did you seek to make clear it was LA by describing ‘a senior member of the peloton’? “Poor Jonathan and his stupid little team,” he spat.“What the f*** are you like? If you were on my team this would have been taken care of, but now you are not going to finish the Tour de France because of a wasp sting. Did you want for us to suppose that this was LA?
Do you have an opinion as to the ‘real’ winner of the grand tours of the past 2 decades? I was very impressed by David Moncoutie in the 2002 tour for example. 12th overall in GC. Or do you reckon it was 1st in fact?
Frank Schleck. Brothers. Did they dope together? Have you ever considered hiring the Schlecks? Can you tell from their bloods whether they have been doping? Do you think they’ve reduced in recent years?
DZ claims that the drop-off in his form from 2005(?) onwards was due to a nasty road accident where he got hit by a truck. Did it have anything to do with coming off a drugs program? Was DZ clean at CSC?
Any idea whether Levi & Big George have any plans to open up?
Is it true that Levi tested pos in 1996 (see Joe Papp’s blog)?
When you started Slipstream, you found that none of the top 10 in the Tour had bloods good enough to be clean. How has this changed circa 2012? (And we know the Giro can be won clean nowadays…)
How much does the ‘team before individual’ ethos deter doping? Is this a contributing factor towards your pushing that ethos?
Do you believe that Cecchini was only providing non-doping ‘training plans’ during the latter part of his career? I believe that both Millar & Dekker have worked with him - presumably you’ve spoken to them both?
Reckon LA will ever come clean?
Any opinion on the former BOA Olympic ban?

Extent of Doping in General in the Peloton
How many in peloton pushed to extremes?
Do you hope that Der Kaiser will make a full confession, perhaps in his book?
Any opinions on why transfusions weren’t used so much during the late 80’s, since they would surely give a massive advantage? Does Kimmage have an opinion on this, being an 80‘s rider?
Reckon LA will ever come clean?

Gossip, Rumour and Speculation

Do your riders mind you calling out their BS in public (e.g. calling Thomas Dekker an ‘arrogant ***’, calling Wiggo ‘difficult to work with’ etc.? I get the impression Wiggo left Garmin with a bit of bad blood between you - was that more to do with the contract dispute, or more because you felt that he showed insufficient gratitude/acknowledgement to yourself and Slipstream for being transformed into a GC rider there?
Do you have an opinion as to the ‘real’ winner of the grand tours of the past 2 decades? I was very impressed by David Moncoutie in the 2002 tour for example. 12th overall in GC. Or do you reckon it was 1st in fact?
Frank Schleck. Brothers. Did they dope together? Have you ever considered hiring the Schlecks? Can you tell from their bloods whether they have been doping? Do you think they’ve reduced in recent years?
Bobby Julich in 1997. Julich/Festina 3rd in tour then domestique on CSC
When you started Slipstream, you found that none of the top 10 in the Tour had bloods good enough to be clean. How has this changed circa 2012? (And we know the Giro can be won clean nowadays…)
Why did Allen Lim leave Garmin? I think he left before Floyd’s public revelations came out, but I think Floyd said that he’d contacted a lot of the people named beforehand, so quite possibly you already knew what was going to come out about Allen. Did this have anything to do with Allen’s leaving the team?
Tyler Hamilton accuses Johnny Weltz of being an EPO courier at USPS. Do you know anything about this? Seems that you took him to task regarding his denial. Did he testify to USADA?
Is it true that you helped David Millar out financially before he joined Slipstream, when he was in the hock for 800 grand? I read a rumour somewhere in the Clinic forum.

The most crucial issues in today’s professional peleton:

Do you have any plans to make a personal appearance in a DZNuts advert?? Enquiring minds want to know!

General:
What was the most difficult question here that you have answered, if at all? The most interesting, if at all?

Best wishes,

Argyle_Fan

JV - I have a new question for you.

Warming down after a stage. There's been some conjecture that this is a new phenomenon for 2012 invented by Team Sky.

But I distinctly remember seeing some of your riders warming down in the "Blood Sweat & Gears" documentary back in 2008.

What's your thoughts on "warming down" post stage in a GT and does it have significant impact on a riders recovery? Is it "new age" technique as some have claimed?

By the by, why does everyone keep taking Ashenden's statements as gospel? Is he still involved directly with teams, or is he merely reading The Clinic and putting forth these opinions as his own? Is he merely "waving a flag", to let people know he's still around and available for comment, after-dinner speeches, Bar-Mitzvahs, etc etc.?

some simple questions;

Vaughter's what is your connection with Gifted Group Ltd?

Why would you get into bed with Bruynel and UCI in a future cycling league and expect fans to believe it will be clean?

Dear JV,

I assume ,maybe wrongly, that as a director for a team with riders that hold US licenses that you have complied with the USAC code of conduct provisions sec.3 (a,e,f,l and probably o) and are also aware of the provisions and protections within the USAC Whistleblower Policy.

Because of candid and open speech that you appear to engage in within many forms of media, some athlete substance use issues have been identified by you and/or other persons of responsibility within your organization. This I assume(@again maybe wrongly) is public knowledge at this point.

I am perplexed at the timeline of these discoveries. If the USAC and the professional licensing body within the organization are aware of these activities
,where is a decree of discipline or pending investigation ?

The appearance of non action for some admitted violators is strange and strangely unfair in my opinion. I find that a very uneven hand has been applied while carrying out the enforcement of the rules of the governing body. There are many here that assume that the UCI is somehow an ultimate authority on all things cycling in every jurisdiction.
I am troubled by the lack of action or acknowledgement of the substance/ethics violations that have been so openly discussed. The UCI may have neglected to take action against the violating riders in question but I hardly see where the USAC can ignore the issue.

I again assume each teams rider code of conduct policy has some section that can be applied to the use of banned substances. Your team has some history with these policies,in which a signed rider was found to have a substance/ethics violation that made him/her ineligible for a contract or further negotiations.
If Danielson,Zabriskie and Vande Velde have violated the spirt of good conduct,by either actively using or selectively omitted previous banned substance use this would appear a clear violation or either team or federation policy.

JV didn't just pop up on this forum and let that slip. Don't you think the points you've outlined have already been addressed formally?
