***EDIT!*** - seems that there are a significant number of questions here with explicit answers now in the 200 page USADA document (e.g. I very much recommend that you check out
http://cyclinginvestigation.usada.org/ with all the official details). At some point, I plan to edit out the questions which are now explicitly answered in this report (and maybe eventually think of a few extra triggered by this report...). But for now, I'm just way too busy - apologies! Not that it should stop all of you in the 'clinic' from carrying on with it all!

Update - I finally rationalised and made (possibly?) somewhat more coherent the questions I started this thread with, plus added a few. Kudos to JV if he has the time to turn up!
Questions for JV1973 part 2
Your Own Doping etc. etc.
Why on earth did it take 3 years to write that Op-Ed in the NYT? Was most of that just waiting for the right time? For yourself or for the antidoping politics etc., or so not to harm slipstream?
How did you get the EPO for CA doping?
Which episode of doping did you feel the worst about? My guess is CA, since that is what led you to retire and (particularly) since at the time you did it (completely??) independently, when you didn‘t need to?
When did you tell your parents & how did they feel? How did you feel?
According to Tyler’s book, you told the CA doctors openly and honestly about your doping before even signing a contract. Did you not ever consider that this might harm your career etc., or even prevent you finding a contract at all? What was your thinking behind it? Was it a personal desire for honesty, or something bigger? Did you talk much individually with Roger Legeay about it? Did he talk at all to you about his amphetamines bust?
Obviously you regret it, but do you feel ashamed and/or guilty of your doping? Why/why not? My guess is that you felt guilty/wrong but not ashamed.
Why did you only mention/hint-at UPS doping for quite a while & not even hint at your Opus-Dei/CA doping?
When is the ‘tell-all’ book coming out? Will you mention every person/name who was involved?
When exactly did you finally give up doping? Did you vacillate back and forth many times?
Did you ever consider just never telling anyone about your doping? I remember your comments about how no-one wants every single detail of every mistake or everything someone has done wrong to be broadcast to all their friends, family and colleagues.
Were you ever scared/ashamed/uncomfortable of people finding out? How did this (presumably) change over time?
Do you ever feel hypocritical, especially whilst mentoring a clean youth team before you ‘came clean’ to them yourself (or did you just give them the heads-up right from the word go)?
Was the doping just in the top rungs of UPS? Were you motivated by trying to make the tour team?
Any more thoughts on transfusions? What if you had a competent doctor you felt safe with?
With all your anti-doping work and the flack you get relating to it, how do you cope with the pressure from the press and fans? Is it your family that helps?
How much reading of doping science did you do whilst doping/considering? Was this motivated by safety, performance or both?
Was it a relief to come out about doping, or just no big deal in the end since your friends/family/colleagues all knew anyway?
What, if anything, did you use apart from EPO?
Were you scared of the dope? Physically?
Have you ever made individual apologies to riders you have wronged e.g. Bassons, e.g. David Moncoutie (who came in the top 10 in the TdF on Alpe de Huez, which you won in the Dauphine?).
Was it harder telling the public, or those close to you?
You mentioned on the cycling news forums that you have been honest about your ‘colourful past’ to anyone who has asked. When did you 1st start talking to the authorities, and 1st start talking (off the record) to the media, in addition to your friends/family/colleagues?
Did you dope on Comptel?
How much do you wish you had at least one time been there to ride down the Champs-Elysees? (The Elysian Fields). Do you envy your riders for that?
Ever thought of a riding comeback? It’s not too late at 39... Hell, Jens is 40 and has signed for another year. Do you do many training rides nowadays with your team?
Outing the UPS 3
Why was it no big deal outing the UPS3? How so casual/spontaneous?
It’s said that TD did some pretty hardcore doping. Is this true? How did this affect your hiring vetting/policy? I.e. that it was (reportedly) pretty hardcore?
Why did the ‘Postal 5’ withdraw themselves from selection from the 2012 Olympics? Fear of backlash when their testimony comes out, or a genuine desire to leave the glory to the clean guys? They all said that it was an individual decision, I think. But did they in fact make an agreement between themselves? Whose idea was it?? I recall that they made various half-hearted excuses…
Did you regret accidentally outing the ‘Garmin 3’ in the forum discussion on JJ, now that you know they are happy about the revelation?
Was outing the ‘Postal 3’ really an ‘accident’? I do admit that I’m a teensy bit suspicious. It does in fact seem like it might make it easier for them all in the long-run, and maybe that was on your mind?
Science of Doping
Did you find it interesting reading up on the science of doping?
Ullrich - would he have won without drugs? (I like him btw). He had a very muscley build, and apparently EPO helps the heavier riders more (witness the descent of the tiny Columbian climbers). Would Ullrich have been the top cyclist without doping?, as Willy Voet seems to think? (Compare also Indurain, as someone who would have benefited disproportionately from EPO - both had larger/musclier builds).
Any opinions on why transfusions weren’t used so much during the late 80’s, since they would surely give a massive advantage? Does Kimmage have an opinion on this?
David Millar etc.
David Millar - how open was he with you? Did he tell you about others, privately, if indeed this is a question you can answer?
Would you have taken on David Millar as co-owner if he hadn’t have been a doper?
Did you help Dave financially when he was in all sorts of legal trouble (read a couple of unsubstantiated rumours in the clinic)? Simply a friend in need?
Doping Strategies etc.
Do you ever use beet juice as a useful enhancer? Do you know much about the studies on this?
What is your opinion on caffeine as a completely legal enhancer. Do you use caffeine on Garmin?
There are scientific studies where it appears that use of simple paracetemol enhances exercise performance, presumably through reduced perception of pain (e.g. see
http://jap.physiology.org/content/108/1/98.full where 13 trained male cyclists are studied). I assume that this would be completely legal. Is this something you are aware of, and would you ever consider using paracetemol on your team? Might it have less effect on pros who are presumably more highly trained to cycle through pain than the general athlete?
Any opinion on AICAR & hematite? Alas undetectable, and Pierre de Boudry has expressed worries.
Do PEDs retain any long-lasting effects, after one has stopped taking them?
Your Approach to the Media
Doubletalk (I.e. hinting at stuff but never explicitly admitting it). Did you enjoy it, apart from practicalities? I can see how it makes you feel one of the ‘in-crowd’…
How much did you tell Paul Kimmage apart from the public record & what gave you to trust him?
You, Frankie and the ‘hot-sauce’ IM
Were you indeed the anonymous guy with Frankie Andreu in Juliet Macur‘s article?
What were your feelings when the ‘hot-sauce’ IM came out?
Will you give a full interview anytime with Kimmage and/or Macur? Why did you choose to speak to Juliet Macur? Did the timing of your (presumed…) admission to Juliet Macur have anything to do with the publication of the ‘hot-sauce’ IM? (Sorry, I don’t remember the exact order of events).
In USPS, did you talk much with Frankie, KL, others, re. Doping/EPO at the time? Did you influence each other re. Whether to dope? Did you talk much afterwards?
In an article at
http://www.scribd.com/doc/34168878/In-Armstrong-s-World-Fear-Paranoia-Prevail , it claims that Frankie Andreu was asked by Armstrong Associates to sign a statement denying material in L.A. Confidential. Apparently this occurred at the 2004 Tour. This is something I haven’t heard before. Is it true? (Dunno why it hasn’t been published more widely, if it is true?).
Feel able to comment more explicitly on the ‘hot-sauce’ IM now that a certain lawyer-happy & testicularly-challenged Texan has been prosecuted by USADA? Did some of the info on Floyd come from Allen Lim (and if so, did this cause any concerns for you in hiring him?)?
Was Frankie ever ****ed off with Betsy for releasing the IM?
Why did Frankie get dropped as DS at USPS after only a couple of seasons? Non-tolerance of doping? Power-play by LA & associates?
Your Anti-Doping Career and its Precedents
If you had not doped you would not now be an anti-doping team manager - what would be your choice?
When is the ‘tell-all’ book coming out? Will you mention every person/name who was involved?
Did Roger Legeay talk much with CA riders about his amphetamines bust? How did it influence his anti-doping attitude? Any idea how clean CA was before Festina?
