The Overlord Surfaces

Aaron Brown was present (allegedly advising McQuaid).

Brown, you may recall, is the Twitter personality known as @UCI_Overlord who is accused of misappropriating roughly $100,000 from, variously, the Paul Kimmage defense fund and his former business partner, Lesli Cohen.
............

I can’t figure out who would be dumber in this situation: Brown, for agreeing to advise McQuaid even as he must have known his presence would be noted by the media attending (some of whom know him and have been criticized by him in the past) and thus revive his own story; or McQuaid, who is so tone deaf that he would think Brown actually had any qualifications or credibility as an advisor.

In the end, their association seems quite fitting and should serve nicely as an epitaph to both of their careers in the sport.

Was Aaron Brown behind that pro McQuaid blog then? I know a month or two ago when the rumour surfaced Lesli said it wasn't his writing style but a few people seemed to think he was.

I know it was mentioned on twitter a lot, but my own thoughts were that it appeared the writing of someone based in UK or Ireland, and not the Canadian.

Of course this does not mean it was not him or that he did not give the input.
And AB doesn't strike me as the sort to do his own digging - just my 2c.

But it would be a perfect scenario if he was indeed helping McQ and McQ stiffed him.

My gut feeling tells me the "money is gone" scam goes a bit deeper than Brown shifting the cash to Girona all by himself. Any updates?

Sabotage?

Aaron sent a e-mail today to Peter Flax (Editor of Bicycling) threatening legal action

Wonder who his lawyer will be?

Maybe Paul Kimmage could set up a paypal fund to assist in Aaron through this difficult time - and then when it reaches $100,000 run off with the money.

The FAQ's are laughable

8. Why do I have to notify you that I would like a refund?

The original transactions occurred almost a year ago. The attempts to track down and contact each individual donor proactively would take a tremendous amount of time. It would greatly extend the timetable for completion of the refunds.

9. Why do I need to provide the email address, PayPal transaction number, the amount, and confirmation of my desire of a refund?

This allows for the proper cross-referencing of the information to ensure a valid refund.

So Aaron has a list of all the donors, the amount they gave, and the Paypal transaction number.....but instead of just refunding the donations he forces donors to do all the work.

It appears that he would prefer that not too many people ask for their money back

I liked when he said his management of the fund was never in question and that this all arises from his conflict with Lesli Cohen, when their business partnership was broken because of the apparent mismanagement of the Fund (and what that revealed) in the first place. Nice reversal of cause and effect there.

I agree to abide by terms and conditions to be set in order to receive the refund

"to be set" - ie they are not available yet? Certainly don't appear to be present anywhere on that page.

Huh!?

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see the words "Aaron Brown" on the website. Were they there?

Is there any authentication that this is really from Aaron Brown, or isn't somebody's sick idea of a joke.

There are no T&C's on the website. An email response from the website said the T&C's would be provided AFTER the refund window closes.

Really, some people should take a course in reading comprehension:
There is currently $64,821.75 US dollars in the fund.

So what happens to any funds left over? What if only part of the donors want their money back? After the refunds are totalled, communication will be sent to Kimmage’s Swiss lawyer asking him what charity Kimmage would like the money donated to. The donation of those funds will be made in Kimmage’s name, and he will receive any benefits associated with the donation.

This is the simplest solution to end one of the most trying times. It’s unfortunate that the situation has escalated the way it has with lawyers and mud-slinging from one side, but this is such the way life in general has gone in today’s digital age.
Good thing some are able to read.

Yep, a bad situation, but what can one do about anonimous people on fregging twotter? Just dont believe them is my advice.

Having visited the site, I hoped for and would have expected something along the lines of the classic 'we will not sell or otherwise provide your data to anyone'.

If, however, my reading comprehension did not permit me to see this part I would appreciate your pointing it out.

This is not to say I don't appreciate what is apparently being done, but must weigh off the <$1,000 versus any risk of potentially having my identity stolen.

Paypal is designed, purposefully to protect arms-length relationships.

Why do they need more than the transaction # itself? Clearly Paypal can make sure the funds go back to where they came from, and is pretty good at it.

Dave.
