Right after Joe's piece came out in Bicycling, I got a call, out of the blue, from a former close friend of Aaron's back in Alberta (who had also been financially burned by him) who says that up until AB moved from Alberta to Nova Scotia in 2007 or so, he
never heard AB
ever talk about cycling, the guy never saw a bike at AB's house, there was no cycling memorabilia, nothing. According to this friend, AB was "a chubby chain smoking lumber salesman."
And according to Aaron's ex-wife, with whom I've also spoken, he could barely ride a bike the whole time they were married (from the time they were both 22 until he dumped her and their two kids in 2007).
So this notion that he was a "former avid cyclist," "a former elite racer" (which is what he told me, that he was a crack sprinter), or even a marginal Cat 4 or 5 racer is absolutely laughable.
