If scripted by Hollywood, the story would be dismissed as trite melodrama: A deadly disease strikes a promising athlete. Despite desperately thin odds, he manages not only to beat the affliction but also to return to the sport and win its top prize, not once but a record seven times. Unbelievable, except it's true.

But the story doesn't end on the finish line at the Tour de France. His experience made him a part of a cancer community, and motivated him to unleash the same passion and drive he does in bike races to the fight against cancer.

Since he made history in 1999, he has won the tour six more times, and has become one of the most recognizable and admired people of this era.

Perhaps, but in hindsight was proclaiming the logical things that were happening, subsequently reported, that far out there? Yes USPS was being investigated so it is not a stretch to proclaim all of those around it were subpoena'd, interviewed, investigated, etc.

RR gets his info from Betsy Andreu and her inside gossip circle, who has coincidentally gotten real quiet lately. Maybe her scorched earth activities in forums and blog postings inre to LA over the last few years wasn't perhaps the best thing to be doing....not in terms of whether she was right or wrong in her criticism, but whether or not she would be a good witness if it did go to trial. She would've been whacked on cross, at least enough to make some of the people on the jury think that perhaps she shouldn't be trusted or she had an agenda. Running around shooting her mouth off the last 7 years was not something a prosecutur would be happy about explaining.

Brodeal some of us rubes in here think that a conviction with these types of issues with the evidence (to totally convince 12 people chosen by the prosecution and defense) that occured years ago, most of it overseas, in a non-American main sport, with easily crossed witnesses, involving an American sporting/charity/inspirational icon (whether you believe or like that or not, that is irrelvant...not everybody is brodeal) who would be lawyered up with the best, would be a difficult proposition.

You claim that it was totally political that he got off; you parrot RR here because that is how he saves face in light of his not only not being in the ballpark with his predictions, but not even being on the same planet.

I admit that since LA does have connections that maybe that tipped the govt further to back off. But the things I wrote above are real, and calculated decisions are made each day by the government for political reasons. The real prospect of the govt. getting their azz handed to them in a trial such as this was real (at a minimum look at history), and sometimes people take more things into consideration than who is friends with what senator. If LA was dead meat, meaning it was highly likely 12 rubes would have convicted him, then this would have moved forward.

Mark never walked around crowing about exactly what would ultimately happen...he was more measured in his posts in general than RR, who proclaimed not only LA would be indicted for everything under the sun but he would also come tail-tucked to plea. That totally ignores the reality of the situation in terms of what can be prosecuted successfully, and LA's typical demeanor.

Looking at the totality of this forum over the last year it would seem, to an impartial observer, that Mark is the one that is level-headed vs those that more resemble chicken little than Bob Woodward. Heck Polish would look like a fortune teller to somebody impartial.

BTW, great shot at 'the hog'. Why anybody believes anything he writes is beyond me. I know hating on LA gives people a long rope to spew nonsense, but his rope stretches on forever.

You got me! Yes, I watch for you to reply to my posts on an hourly basis at a minimum. What you don't realize is why I do that, and after I tell you then perhaps you will thank me.

Remember when you used to reply to your own posts, and congratulate yourself in the 3rd person? I have taken it upon myself to help you out of this lack of self esteem/identity crisis you seem to go thru at times. I feel that if I reply to you quickly, then you will not feel the need to give yourself third person attention. I am hoping this will translate over to your every day life as well...I imagine it is pretty embarassing when you are out shopping at the mall and people hear you mumbling about how great your last post on cyclingnews was. You should get a t-shirt with the emoticon "stick out tongue" on it to really get you on the road to recovery.

Moving on, you jumped into a conversation between brodeal and myself....you chose to come into that and toss feces around your cage. Who jumps in on whose side is irrelevant to me; opinions about what would have happened if indictments came down or opinions about how the trial would have gone are just that; opinions. Unless you have some type of time machine where you can go back and change the past actions and then jump ahead and know how it would have played out, then you have no better opinion than me, regardless of how many of your fellow cult members jump in.

I stated my logic about how I came to my conclusions; you just want to put your hands over your ears and whine and you and your pals want to for example chastise somebody that thinks LA's lawyers would not just sit there and respect the 'victim' while BA, FL, TH, or whoever spews whatever they wish on the stand. If you want to think the avg. American juror is foaming at the mouth like you and RR, then that is your prerogative but I disagree. If you think these issues aren't taken into account when deciding to indict, you are clueless. You are the one in fantasyland toto, forget 2002.

As for Mark, I also stated my opinion about how he has been mostly measured in his posts, and how RR is an alarmist that has been proven 100% wrong on his predictions. Now he is at it again so forgive me while I yawn.
