Tour du Maroc started yesterday, first stage of 10. A few Continental teams and national squads with some useful names entering. The first stage went to a strong breakaway over a mostly flat route from Settat to Marrakech. There are tougher stages to come, although given the terrain around today's host town, Beni-Mellal, the mostly flat route is a bit of a shame.

Other mentionable names in the group of 30 at 1'36 - Thomas Vauborzeix and Justin Jules as leaders of the Veranclassic team, as well as Soufiane Haddi also of Sky Dive Dubai. Just behind this group, Kevin Seeldraeyers (now riding for Törku Seker Spor) was just tailed off the back of it at 1'44. Albert Torres lost 8 minutes, while in the group at 11 minutes, much of the rest of Team Ecuador (their stronger riders are in Spain for the 1.1 races this weekend I think?). Moises Dueñas - now with RFEC Speedroad Gomista amateur team - was also back here. If he does well, expect Burgos-BH to pick him up for the autumn races like the last two years. Surprised to see Tarik Chaoufi and Salah Eddine Mraouni back there as well as I'd have expected them to target this. Also Saïd Bdadou, who returns from his prednisone ban.

11 riders in the main move of the important part of the day. Includes Beñat Intxausti, Paco Mancebo, Ion Izagirre, Amets Txurruka (because of course it does), Imanol Estévez, Ángel Vicioso and Hugh Carthy. Had 2 mins at 30km remaining, cut in half at 20km out so it might be doomed.

What a brilliant ride by Küng, even when he was in the 2nd group chasing the break, I had a feeling he could win or get a good result, he caught the break and then rode away when the peloton was about to catch them, and built a 30s advantage, absolutely brilliant, so strong.

Катюша don't like their chances from the break so are trying to nullify it with six riders on the front of the chasing pack, which has been t rimmed to around 30-35. Movistar have four, as do Cannondale and Caja Rural, who are monitoring. Movi and Caja Rural seem happy enough with their chances from the break with Intxausti, Izagirre and Txurruka.

Break splinters on the last ascent of Eraul, now Intxausti, Vicioso and Acevedo off the front. Катюша sit up, Caja Rural now the only ones chasing in the bunch.

At the top of Eraul, with just the descent back into Estella to go and the Basilica del Puy finish, Acevedo has lost a few seconds on Intxausti and Vicioso. The former is the stronger climber but the latter has the better sprint. Interesting finale coming up... and the bunch is at just under 30" with Valverde looking ominous!

Vicioso takes the win, Ion Izagirre managed somehow to catch back on from the remnants of the break on the descent and was 2nd with Intxausti 3rd!

Vicioso is the same age as Paolini and Peraud - a good week to be old, it seems. It's his first win in nearly four years, the last one being the Giro stage that is only really remembered unfortunately for Weylandt's death. Acevedo held on for 4th, then Valverde won the bunch kick on the final uphill for 5th.

Tomorrow a similar field will take on the Vuelta a La Rioja, however that's a much flatter race and is up against some races that could be considered slightly more important, so I doubt much coverage will be forthcoming!
