Re:

Boaro surprised and let Navardauskas win the overall. I guess somebody forgot to tell Tinkoff-Saxo that intermediate sprints give bonus seconds.

Dunno about ignorance, but Navardaukas can be a very strong sprinter in tough terrain.

Klasika Primavera Amorebieta (1.1), immediately following País Vasco. Back to the domestic péloton for the most part and teams coming in from Portugal, + a few Iberian-based external teams such as Lokosphinx and Inteja. Oh, and Sky Dive Dubai, although apart from Paco Mancebo all their big guns are in Morocco at the moment. Movistar gave Nairito and Ion Izagirre the day off after their efforts in País Vasco, but Beñat Intxausti raced as this event starts and finishes in his hometown. A big break got established including strong members of the strongest teams in the race, and so they were able to build up a reasonable advantage and fight out the victory on the all-important climb of the Alto de Muniketa (once from Arriandi and twice from Zugastieta, due to roadworks on the Alto de Autzagane, which is usually the second climb on the circuit). José Herrada was able to get a gap, and with teammate Marc Soler able to interrupt the chasing efforts, he was able to turn it into a solo victory, with late on Evgeniy Shalunov managing to press away for 2nd ahead of a small chasing group; while Shalunov quickly left the chasers behind, he was unable to make significant enough inroads into Herrada's lead and the Spaniard was able to coast home.

1 José Herrada López (Movistar Team) ESP 3'56'20
2 Evgeniy Shalunov (Lokosphinx) RUS +29
3 Carlos Barbero Cuesta (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) ESP +2'34
4 Francisco Mancebo Pérez (Sky Dive Dubai) ESP +m.t.
5 César Fonte (Radio Popular-Boavista) POR +m.t.
6 Marc Soler Jiménez (Movistar Team) ESP +2'42
7 Sergey Shilov (Lokosphinx) RUS +4'02
8 Giovanni Visconti (Movistar Team) ITA +m.t.
9 Kirill Sveshnikov (Lokosphinx) RUS +m.t.
10 Amets Txurruka (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) ESP +m.t.

All it took was a stage race with no other sprinters. I rate Bouhanni highly, but that field is like baby seals versus a seal clubber.

Again not much of a field, but three wins in quick succession will do no harm to Bouhanni's morale.

The Eurosport commentators were saying that the Cofidis lead out weren't going fast enough, but actually I thought that was deliberate - they know they don't have the horsepower of an Ettix or Giant train, so they have to measure their effort carefully. Given the resources they are working with, it looked very professional to me.

Such a shame this race has fallen so far so fast. It was quite an important April race just five years ago; 2009 it was one of Contador's early season races of choice (usually the last before his break ahead of Tour warmup), 2010 saw the awesome duel on Morredero between Contador, Igor Antón, Ezequiel Mosquera and Juan Mauricio Soler, while 2011 was the last career race - and career win - of Xavi Tondó.

Sanz is just so crap. Even at his specialty (sprint) he can't beat Bilbao, hardly a specialist.
If he wasn't Unzué's nephew he'd never have turned pro.

In which case he's little different to the likes of Noè Gianetti, or the less talented siblings crew like Juraj Sagan, or the friend's coattails bunch like later-career Benjamin Noval or Joaquín Novoa.

Tomorrow's stage is mostly in Portugal (!) and then Sunday's queen stage finishes at the Alto de Lubián, same as last year's race (though that had an interesting parcours day to Bembibre after that).

Really weird the stage tomorrow with a full climb to the Torre so far away from the finish. I'm hoping for Frederico Figueiredo to strike on the climb to Lubian on the final stage!
