Yeah, he was a very unlikely winner in that reduced sprint.

Trentin started it very early and Couqard had to pass him a bit too early to be able to hold on to the line, set it up for someone else to pass.

Probably some tired legs in the first race of the season for some.

But where was Laporte? Didnt even contest in it.

He was sprinting in the second group.

Yesterday in the evening, the team announced that Rutsch had been testetd positive for Corona. For this reason he couldn´t start. Second test was negative..

The road races of the New Zealand National Championships were raced today...

Georgia Williams (Bike Exchange) won the women’s road race. She also won the ITT title on Friday.

George Bennett (Jumbo-Visma) has won the men’s race (he was 2nd in the TT).

I don't think it is that unusual for riders not eligible to win the national title to appear in championship races in countries with few people contesting the event. I think it happens more in the time-trials where they cannot really affect anyone else, although Stewart didn't do that event on Friday.

Stewart rode in the NZ classic for a team called "Trust Team": I guess one can be on a club team as well as a UCI registered team. He must have spent the winter down there, part of the main cycling culture there, not difficult to ask for an exceptional invite under such circumstances.
