Look, I understand how huge it is to be there for the birth of your child. And especially to be there for your wife, for those of you who don't know! DO NOT screw that up.
But .... uhhhh .... you were hired to be a leader on your team in the biggest bicycle race (by far) in the world. And you bail out mid-way through? It's kind of a big deal. And it makes me think that he thinks this team or at least his time on this team is finished.
It makes it look like the portions of the race he was most interested in were over with so he was taking his ball and going home. I know he has a huge following and deservedly so, so I am going to take heat. I am pretty surprised I didn't see more commentary here. Wondering if there isn't another discussion I missed.
He said months ago that he might not finish the tour because of Olympics etc. The birth just comes on top of all this.
Also, he said he won't be super-dom for anyone this year (again because of Olympics), so what is the point of slugging it through huge mountain stages? The only thing to look forward to would be the final TT, but does he really need another third place?
You could say it's bad for the team, but really they don't have a podium contender any more, and they will probably be able to defend their 9th and 10th places or whatever by themselves. Right now, Cance needs to figure out what to do in order to win at the Olympics (which is proving a daunting task as you can see!), instead of wasting time in a race that is already over.
