Most racing in Australia summer are Crits and it can get hot up to 35 deg and heat on the bitumen is double that. we race for 1 hour so we need two bottles at least and another after the finish.

One problem is if someone sees you taking a drink they attack so drinks are short.
It is general policy that racing is canceled if the tem is above 35 deg as a safety issue.

Water dosnt replace any of the minerals lost in sweat it dosnt stop cramps . you loose a gram of salt and a gram of magnesium in every litre of sweat.

dehydration causes big issues but its also esential to start a race with an empty bladder then you reduce the posibility of bladder reflux that is what will cause big health problems.

Too much water and not enough sodium your brain will start to swell.

#Not sure who wrote the vegan info on Cootha but Ive got an alibi, Im in Davao City. ;)

#The problem with drinking to thirst is that thirst is sooooo subjective. You could be doing an xc race in dust and in the first 5 minutes you get trail throat but its nothing to do with hydration levels and all do do with dust inhalation. You could also mistake genuine thirst for trail throat and think 'oh its ok, just some TT and nothing to do with hydration..' and literally kill your performance or possible yourself.

#Of all the people that Ive met that hypotranemia, none of them were in top condition, heat acclimatised or following a low sodium diet. Google up hypotranemia cases and you will find its out of shape, last minute trainers that drink lots of beer and eat heaps of salt and say 'man! I drank water and almost killed myself! better watch out for water now!'

#The notion that people routinely attack when someone takes a drink is bogus. I cant think of a single race situation in the last 13 years of racing where someone lost a race cos they had a sip and got dropped as a result. I CAN think of many times when the strongest rider on the day bonked/dehydrated themselves and got dropped though. Perhaps thats why Floyd Landis did that mega breakaway in TDF 06 so he could have peace and quiet when tiping water over his head. Landis 'I knew if I rode at 8 watts per kg for the next 30mins that I could poor water over my head and hydrate with out worrying about being attacked..';)

#Drink enough water so your urine is clear and frequent (at least every 2 hours) and understand it can take a week or more to properly hydrate if we become dehydrated.

#Id like to see those 2 sports scientists cycle across Australia in mid summer and tell me its ok to wait for thirst... Lab experiements are good but nothing beat real world experience. Bit like Cavendish-crap lab results relative to sprinters but his real world race results prove otherwise.

In regardess to first point:-
Your experience of people suffering these symptoms is hardly a conclusive analysis, unless you have actually collected the data and obtained a thorough history.

Second point:-

Believe it or not there are other places in the world where it gets hot.

Cavendish does not exceed by any significant amount the performance done in labs. The way people may choose to interpret the data, however, does.

Can you state difinitively that drinking to thirst will hamper performance in the example you gave? More than a n=1 example please.

another great thing not to get dehydrated is putting a little bit of salt in your water. It more or less keeps the mineral balance ok and it helps keeping the water up, that's what salts do :p

I was out training in Chang Mai a few days ago with Tommy (manager from Giant Asia Team) and the dude is a beast on wheels for sure even though he is 'retired and over 40'.

People always give me lame *** excuses like:
Im too old
I started too late
I come from this country
Im too fat
I dont have a 6.8kg bike..

If look hard enough there is ALWAYS someone with less talent than us doing better. How? Hard and smart training/eating/living with people better than you are at the moment.

the simple fact that you chose to be vegan shows you dont understand human physiology very well whatever floats your boat i guess. but you should not give dietary related health advice. i have studied nutrition quite a bit being vegetarian is ok that can work well. being vegan is a poor health choice for the majority of humans some can get by many get quite sick quite fast.
if your doing it as a political/animal cruelty/pollution impact thing great i respect that i really do. but it cant be sold as a good health choice if your educated.

Ah! The usual 44 'fact'-based post. Please elicit some evidence demonstrating the wisdom gleened from your extensive research.
Further, I believe that I'm correct that durianrider's youtube post relates to dietary composition and burning carbs to assist with weight loss.

for "information" read "incoherent ranting".

leaving aside your actual position, your arguments are not very clear.

and giving nutritional advice to those who are 30kgs overweight "farting into the couch" isn't rocket science (and needn't be as extreme as veganism - but I don't really care to argue against veganism. Whatever floats your boat.)

Every post you make is about how awesome you are and, therefore, how awesome being a vegan is.

10 seconds into the video and you're bragging that someone said "you look so good, you're so fit, you're so slim." And that's about as far as I got into your latest attempt at self-promotion. I couldn't care less about what goes into your mouth, but what comes out is crap.

Pedaling Squares's advice for arrogant cyclists:
Get a friend. Talking into a camera and telling yourself how great you wish you were does nothing for your self-esteem. Be the man you wish you were and you wont have to talk to yourself about yourself any longer. Durianrider at home

okay, if you studied it...you can explain it. so back up your claims. I know i have never seen any conclusive scientific studies on it and i've seen a few. if you don't, well the environment as well as animals are suffering daily because of ignorant meat eaters giving us the same bull**** over and over.

In any case I choose to be a vegetarian (and not a vegan) because milk is cheaper than soy, i don't have money growing on my back and i don't understand what the problem is with milking a cow...but still, respect for the vegans out there.

In any case, the guy is right, from what i can tell. a high carb diet is great if you can get all of it from fruits and veggies. I do believe this. but a high carb diet with lots of refined sugars is not so great. nuff said.

thank you very much. I mean of course you put this to the test many times. with such an experienced talking-to-oneself-in-the-camera expert such as you, I can definitely cross this off my list of things to do to improve my self esteem, right?

hey man, i think this is one of the best vids you've ever done, it's got everything in it, YOU!

I've been a raw vegan for three months now and I got to say its the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. I used to be really unhappy and I thought that I had to listen to people and respect them, I was a regular guy and thought nothing of it. Now after changing my diet I've become a sanctimonious, condescending ***, my girlfriend is now really hot and regularly fellates me (she says I now taste of kiwifruit). I'm devastatingly attractive, more so than brad pit cos that ugly mother eats road kill, and I get to ride with pro cyclists who come to see me for training advice and to get my autograph.

The only problem that i have is trying to balance being so fit, attractive, popular, smart, thin, fast, strong, healthy, righteous and perfect while blogging, writing, trolling, making videos, video blogging and video trolling. There just doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day to be me! As someone who has now had to deal with being perfect for many years what advice can you offer me?

Peace out. Brothers in fruity perfection, Lance

I am sure you intended to write either a very indignant or funny reply. Too bad you can't write. It might have worked if it had only made sense.

After reading several vegetarian/vegan threads I have concluded that a sense of humour is acquired from meat products.

It appears that durianrider has smoked a wee bit too much of Byron Bay's best known cash crop.
'scuse me while I eat my ham sammich.

Lol, Durianrider gets under the skin of the meateaters again. I'll give the guy 10/10 for passion. Keep it up mate. And of course it helps that he is also right.

I think inspiring others to lose weight is a very honourable thing. To the critics, what have you done today?

I ate a Tuna on wholemeal bread sandwich and some almonds washed down with pure water .... secretly wishing it was a Big Mac with Fries and a coke

Ive been out training with Lance. He is a very approachable guy thesedays.

Went out today with Allesandro Ballan. Did 3hrs in the hills. Was gonna go out with Cavendish but they stayed on the flats. Hooking up with Greipel and the Lotto henchmen tommorrow for 5 hours in the hills.

Now wonder they call it Radelaide.
