Why?

I suppose he had no chance as well in 2009.

Also look at his stage win in the 2009 Tour when he got over the Col de l`Escrinet and won the sprint beating Hushovd in the end. Cervelo set a lightening quick pace over the climb and everyone though Cav would struggle to stay the pace. But Cav stayed the pace and that climb was 14km at 4.1%.
And this was the profile of the stage that day:

Easily Cav's best win. He hasn't shown that sort of climbing form ever since though. He undoubtedly can do it but IMO a small group will go over the Poggio and stay away, he wont be in it.

he stands no chance and will never stand a chance in that race.

I expected him to ride for experience but he has literally no chance unless there is a landslide on both Poggio and Cipressa so they just go down the coast road and miss out the climbs.

I think Farnese will be pretty visible with Pozzato and Gatto. Pippo was getting in extra kilometres after several days of an already brutal Tirreno so should be in good shape.

A key rider for Team Sky today will be Lofkvist. He is supposed to be the guy to help Cavendish over Poggio. He is usually quiet strong in MSR but since he got sick during T-A and couldn't get some tough and long stages in his legs, question is how fit is the do well after 280k today. If his form isn't there, Team Sky could decide to use EBH to protect Cav on Poggio, thereby limiting EBH's chances to follow an attack late on Poggio, and instead trust that EBH can get Cav back to the front after Poggio. Could be a strategy that completely fails. So, it will be important that Lofkvist is in shape today for Team Sky to succeed

none of course they are all pretty much out of shape. duarte is the best and after tirreno I expect his shape to have improved a lot. he's usually rider that gets into shape quickly. suarez, romero and quintero are well suited to this race but I'm not hopefuly about their shape. especially suarez I'm afraid of

still they can attack in the climbs or beginning and if other teams like acqua and liquigas follow and dare to make a hard race to control and a hard pace we will see something like last year
