People should really understand that that "beer gut" they always notice on Cav is just because the way he breathes. It's been said hundreds of times already. When you're fat, well, you don't win races. ( I'm not a Cav fan btw, I do think that he's the best at what he does, only what he does is boring.)

Indeed. And a white jersey accentuates this "beer gut". Look at Wiggo, who has the same, and I doubt anyone would argue that guy is overweight?

I'm going to disagree on that one.

The SKY rider signing in wears that helmet cover.. It looks ugly and today i don't see a use for it. Besides cover from seagull**** dropping from the SKY ;)

So if Cav really is in his peak form, chances are he hangs on. In the immortal words of Jerry Horne, I'm depressed.

The way I see it only Canc / some other very strong rouleurs going full gas after the Poggio descent might be enough to force a selection. Not that I'm very optimistic, though.

If he's in such form, shouldn't he attack on the Poggio? (serious question)

You seem to be under the illusion that because Milan-San Remo wasn't a sprinter's race in the past, it isn't a sprinter's race in the present.

Cavendish attack on the Poggio? Why would he do something stupid like that, when he knows full well that he will win a sprint? The onus is on everybody else to attack him. Him attacking on a climb will only hurt his chances of winning.

The Poggio isn't exactly difficult either. Two years ago you had Garzelli stringing them out on the front and Petacchi two men back, breathing through his nose.

Had we restored Bordeaux-Paris or Paris-Brest-Paris in recent years, it would have ended up in a bunch sprint and everybody would've found it normal.

90 years of non-sprint pretty much shapes the race. The oldtimers had the same modern training method as they have today. Only the equipment including the thing we can't talk about here has changed.

The Poggio is difficult because everything is difficult after 290km.

After that frightening picture you describe, Petacchi was SEARCHED !

What happened from 1940-1980 is not as relevant to the race today as what happened from 2000-2011. It wasn't a sprinter's race, but now it is.

Speculate as to the reasons for it all you like, but that's just how it is. 10 of the last 14 editions have been bunch gallops. Yes, the percentage of races in the history of the event that have been bunch sprints is fairly small, but the percentage of RECENT editions that have been bunch sprints is very high.

it's no surprise though.cycling becomes more and more professional and every rider who is a pro.medical, scientific, financial and so on.
if you have ten strong sprinter's teams here you must expect the race to finish in a bunch sprint,i don't see any surprise.
basically, everything under 4% steep is not a climb for pro ranks.not even after 290 km
