It got 2 words litterally, without video or even explanation what the giro is, so anyone who doesn't know cycling will think its some nothing week race.

And got absolutely no coverage from ITV even though they are the tdf broadcasters:eek:

People probably thought he won the Giro :)

He´d share it with nobody I think

You surely mean among active cyclists? If so, only Petacchi has 10 or more wins (20), but I don't know if his comeback is going anywhere. In that case, you are right.

Nobody will ever catch Delio Rodriguez' 39 stage wins though, I guess.

spalco meant getting double digits in all three Grand Tours (not just the Vuelta), nobody has done that before.

"Peta's husband"? :p

As celeb obsessed as the British public allegedly are, page 3 girls are not famous in the slightest. Ive never heard of a single page 3 girl other than her and thats because she married Cav.

Edit: never knew cav takes care of Peta's son from a previous relationship. That's nice of him.

He is the epitome of the British way of never giving up. He didn't have to do the mountains but he persevered through horrendous weather and as a result he got the red jersey and the final stage win. Chapeau:cool:
Unlike of course the so called favorite for the GC Sir Wiggins:rolleyes:
They should be awarding Cav the title as wel:confused:l.

Sam Fox or Linda Lusardi are about the only ones that spring to mind. A bit before your time though I think.

I am no expert on this but I am guessing her son came as part of the deal ;)

Actually, I would say that Cav has something many British sports people seem to lack and that is a single minded (verging on bloody minded) winning mentality.

Those two plus Jo Guest are the ones that come to mind straight away but as you say it's a age thing in the 80,s they would be on game shows etc .

He is very well on the road to become the greatest sprinter ever.
He'll probably never have the class of a Cipollini, but boy...is he good!
Never seen such an effective way of sprinting...if you don't count Abdu, who almost "killed" his opponents :D

Any opinions on Cav's likely wins for TdF 2013?

PR material from OPQS says 7 sprinter stages. I assume they mean stages:
1, 5, 6, 10, 12, 13, 21

I think Cav would be favourite for all of these except maybe 5 looks a little bumpy.

But I'm also wondering about stages 3, 7, 14. Might he have a shot at these? Kind of the way he and OPQS pulled out stage 13 at the Giro?

And to get really crazy. If Cav wins stage 1, could he defend on stage 2?

Probably I was too impressed by his giro stage 13 win, so fire away.

Stage 2 really isn't that crazy. Will only be Team Sagan & Team Degenkolb with a serious interest in pulling for 60km to keep the various sprinters and their teams from riding back on.

it's not so much about the big climbs but about the little in the end I think

98m above sea level, 12km from the finish?

If the sprinters get back on after the big climb (and it will be a massive full team commitment to stop them from someone else) then that speed bump will not change things.

Stage 3 is much much harder, but stage 2, the more I look at it, the more I see a sprint.

Yea, could be. Depends on what the other teams do of course, cannondale prob will unleash hell on that climb.

1km at 9%, with parts of ~15%, a little bit more than a speed bump, especially after a hilly stage

some sprinters may make it, but not all

In 1km it would actually be quite an achievement for a well positioned sprinter to reach the back of the peloton, let alone get dropped. Certainly makes it harder but would be really shocking performance to not contest a sprint if you're in the peloton with 15k to go on that stage.

Perhaps one can draw a parallel to stage 13 (TdF '12):

profile-13.jpg

result:

GER 1 GREIPEL, André (LOTTO BELISOL) 4:57:59
SVK 2 SAGAN, Peter (LIQUIGAS-CANNONDALE)
NOR 3 BOASSON HAGEN, Edvald (SKY PROCYCLING)
FRA 4 HINAULT, Sébastien (AG2R LA MONDIALE)
RSA 5 IMPEY, Daryl (ORICA-GREENEDGE)
FRA 6 SIMON, Julien (SAUR-SOJASUN)
ITA 7 MARCATO, Marco (VACANSOLEIL-DCM)
BEL 8 GILBERT, Philippe (BMC RACING)
SVK 9 VELITS, Peter (OMEGA PHARMA-QUICKSTEP)
GER 10 HONDO, Danilo (LAMPRE-ISD)

The bizz end hill on stage 13 was considerable harder, but the heavies had almost double the distance to catch back on again.

Except that you don't have to slide back to the back of the peloton to get dropped. If the pace is high, you're not even safe in say 50th position, because when those guys in front of you can't hold the wheel and the peloton splits, you're ****ed as well.

Apart from green, also the maillot jaune will be at stake, so I don't expect anything else than Cannondale drilling it real hard on that climb. And even if Cav manages to hold on, chances are high he will have consumed considerably more energy throughout the stage than Sagan, going into the sprint.

It's Sagan vs Degenkolb imo.
