My dad adored the Tour, Cav was also my dads favourite current rider.

First Tour since he passed there was surely something written in the stars about today. He'd have been jumping for joy at that finish. Definitely brought a tear to the eye.

Great win.

Sorry to hear that!

Biggest win of Cav's career. WC & MSR were massive but they came at time when everything in Cav's career was going his own way. This completes the professional cycling set for Cav!

He hasn't looked this good since 2012, it's crucial for his career as a lot of ppl including me thought he was past it. Its massive as it promises so much for the next few years!

Really nice to see him win again, but I couldn't disagree more with the idea that this is biggest win. You could come up with similar reasons for describing his first Tour stage win as his biggest and be exactly as wrong. This win has some special surrounding circumstances that make it stand out a little among his stage wins, but is still ultimately one Tour de France stage among 27.

You don't think that, for Cav, his first yellow jersey in the Tour is a big deal? It elevates this win above many others, even if it's not his biggest, and came after lots of people wanted to believe he was past it.

Exactly this. There's no doubt that Cav will cherish this much more than any of his other TdF stage wins apart from arguably his first, his 6th in '09, that stage in 2012 where he caught the breakaway with about 100m to go in rainbow or one of those which led to his green jersey in 2011, but at the end of the day, wearing the yellow jersey doesn't contribute much to someone's palmares, especially if they're anywhere near as successful as Cav

For Cav, yes. Who doesn't dream of wearing the yellow jersey as a kid?
But in terms of what it contributes to his palmares, nothing more than any of his other stage wins

is there something still missing from his palmarés, besides an olympic gold?

He hasn't won any of:

Gent-Wevelgem (Freire, EBH, Boonen x3, Sagan x2, Degenkolb)
GP Ouest-France (Goss, EBH and Kristoff),
Vattenfall Cyclassics (Freire, McEwen, Farrar x2, EBH, Démare, Degenkolb, Kristoff, Greipel
Paris-Tours (Petacchi, Freire, Degenkolb)
Paris-Brussels (McEwen x5, Goss, Boonen, Greipel x2, Groenewegen)

Thanks TMP402. He still has some work to do, then.

Maybe now that he won a stage, dimension data won't mind if he abandons before the 3rd week to prepare for the olympics.
He beat Kittel. While he's rubbish at climbing he survives it better than Kittel does and it takes less out of him. DD will be desperate to have him racing on the Champs Elysees.

Usually he's better at climbing than Kittel, but with his track legs it might not be the case.

This. Theoretically, with all the track stuff he's done, he should be capable of a better sprint, but with a lot less endurance. I suspect Cav was helped massively by the slow pace of the peloton in the final 25km, which usually would favour Kittel over other sprinters.

An amazing turnaround from Cav's capitulation at the national championship.
