He's going to ride the Olympic Race for two different U.S. teams according to PCS.

I wouldn't call it foolishly. They didn't ride for a 6th place, that's sure.
Jorgenson could have easily had a chance at a podium or more, if riding smarter earlier in the race. They could have had the numbers against MVDP.

Both him and Pedersen could have not rode more for MVDP than they did, so yes... I will call it foolish.

How Jorgenson rode on Wolvenberg contributed to a group later on with Van Baarle, Benoot and Pedersen having a sizable gap that Van der Poel had to bridge across on his own. It was their best chance to win the race, and Jorgenson played his part in it.

Should have put on the gas put didnt, while having three in the group. Poor.

I didn't get to see the last 45k or so.

I saw the part where VDP powered away over one of the cobbled climbs where everyone was walking.

I thought I saw Jorgensen only 5-10sec or so behind VDP but when I checked the results he was well down.

Did he blow up in his attempt to follow Mathieu?

In short, yes.

He held that gap at 10s or so for a few km, but shortly blew up and was absorbed by the chasing group about a minute down. I'm not exactly sure what happened after that but he kept going backwards.

For a direct confrontation with van der Poel and on such route Visma has Wout and as he wasn't in the race the idea likely was to try with Matteo instead. It looked rather OK, until Matteo blew up.

It's how the efforts turned out....you can backplay every fart a rider has and still not know what he ate that caused it. I'm amazed they can equalize the chaos with changing strategy and still finish a day like this. That...and Alpecin rode exceptionally and probably with a bit of good luck.
chapeau ...... a brave move nonetheless.
He could also be finding the limits of his current workload. PN, DDV both had much less pressure and his fortunes were good with general strategy. Welcome to the crosshairs, Mr. Jorgenson. No small mistake goes unpunished.

Pretty much.

Van der Poel was powering through downhill, wet corners whilst Jorgenson was very cautious. He had no chance.

So next race is Critérium du Dauphiné. Will Matteo be co leader with Kuss? Can he climb with Roligc and Evenepoel?
I think too big of mountains for him in the last 3 stages, a lot more climby than PN. Still hard to tell how he will continue to develop for GC. Kuss should be coming into good form now. But worth a try and see what happens.

I think he'll be co-leader with Kuss, and maybe depending on how they feel or how the race goes one will help the other.

I don't think he will be able to properly follow Roglic and Evenepoel though. Then again he showed in Paris-Nice that he improved.

He's a big guy right? I was pleasantly surprised he won P-N and could defend in the hills against Remco.

But stages 6,7, and 8 at the Dauphine look rough.

Yeah, he is not for the high mountains. No way can he make the top-10 in the Tour.

Hard to say if they can climb with Roglic. Mateo's proven he can climb with Remco, at least in the early season. If either of them can separate from Primoz, that'd be a good start for tactics for the other teammate. It's a short stage race and the bigger climbs shouldn't pose as much drama as the last half of the Tour. It should be fun to watch, though.
