Another poster registered years ago with no posts suddenly posting like they've always been here...

I am interested to know if that is some kind of misdemeanour/misdemeanor.

Seems like a common sockpuppet pattern to me. Fancy registering years ago and never posting, then suddenly posting under that username.

I would like to understand the mentality or what have you that leads someone to do that.

And how they manage to remember the password from all that time ago.

Or: they set up a bunch of users form years ago and then just reuse them as they get banned. And the password is always the same, or similar.

I reckon CN could delete all accounts that have no posts over 12 months old?

Just because someone registered a while ago and has not posted on forum does not make them a sock puppet.

In the case of Wrinklyvet he has been posting on the comments section of the newsfeed for a considerable time and since that function has been disabled I suspect he has now decided to post in the main forum. How does that make him a sock puppet??

Additionally it is not too difficult to remember your password. You can have it set that you a permanently logged in to the forum.

As for your suggestion that anyone who has not posted for over 12 months should have account deleted, why should that be so? I have been registered for over 4 years but rarely post. Does that make me a sock puppet? Does that mean my account should be deleted?

No I don't think it does.

It seems that the sock puppet accusation is all to easily levied around here. Some suck puppets are much more obvious than others, but you cannot make the accusation just because someone has a low post count or the account has been dormant for a while.

I would like to "second" Adamski's comment here about the sometimes benign nature of long-dormant account holders motives. My posts here are extremely rare, however, I do love to peruse (lurk, if you prefer?) the often entertaining/amusing/informative various sub-forums of this site. It is highly unlikely that I will ever become a prolific poster here, but in case I ever do, please just call me "Lamb Chop"!

I am indeed the same wrinklyvet who has disagreed with Dear Wiggo on occasion in the comments section of the main website and am not a sock puppet.

Adamski, you are correct about me and why I am here.

I am not the only refugee from the comments section collapse.

See Adamski's comment and my response to him. You ought to be able to recognise me by now.

Cheers.

Wow, Dear Wiggo is a cyberbully if I ever saw one. It just hasn't gotten to the nastiness yet, but a level of bullying all the same. I was going to engage the last post with replies to each paragraph but I thought better about it. That would bring me to the same level as a bully. :(:(:(

What you say is fair, but you must also realize that 9 times out of 10 the pattern described is absolutely a sock puppet. I don't think we need to mass delete accounts either, we can deal with them as they come up.

We have had a LOT of sockpuppets here, probably mostly because we have had a lot of bans. We're all pretty good at spotting them. No, we're not right every time, but to say the sockpuppet accusation is too easily levied misses the mark IMO. It's almost always correct.

Not a problem if it's done in this section of the forum. If it's done in threads discussing cycling, that's a problem and those posts should be reported. The right thing to do is report the offending post and describe why you think that person is a SP. I have done this several times and it's quite effective.

Not always though, as some people with entirely too much time on their hands use proxy servers, making it difficult to confirm who they are.

Probably worth reconsidering jumping to that conclusion. We have had more sock puppets here than can reasonable be counted, and the pattern is the same almost every time.

Sounds like maybe the comments issue is creating some false positives here, but overall this group is pretty good at spotting the socks.

I am specifically talking about someone who registered in 2011 and did not start posting until a week ago, ie NO POSTS AT ALL, and is posting prolifically, solely in the clinic.

My suggestion was that accounts over 12 months old with NO POSTS AT ALL be deleted, not no posts since 12 months ago.

You could also possibly track logins, etc.

I do not think 3 years ago is "a while".
I also disagree that the user would remain logged in all that time, with no posts, etc.

You do not have to be logged in to read the forum.

Your original post was not about me but I was curious about the theme.

That's why I am in this exchange of views.

I would much prefer to be back in the comments section and I don't know if I will continue here if it is reinstated.

However I feel your idea is grossly unfair. You managed to stigmatise me with your response to my question. Now you repeat your idea that people like me should be struck off without any opportunity to explain.

Sorry, but that's not what a worldwide forum supporting an international sport (or whatever you like to think it is) should be like.

Jumping to conclusions about everyone just because you think you detect a pattern or stereotype seems to be a common theme among so-called cycling fans. Let's not extend it further.

And while you are about it you can apologise to me for the response you gave me, and all will be smooth.

Wrinklyvet: I get you want to make it about you, and to fight me about this, but like your first sentence says, it is not about you.

The only person stigmatising you is yourself.

In the IT world, databases track things, and you have to register and login as a user to comment on the articles on CN. Therefore, you have copious quantities of "posts" - just not in the forum.

I see you are engaging in hyperbole "Jumping to conclusions about everyone" - that one is a double whammy - as per usual.

As for an apology? If you don't like the answers to the questions you ask, don't ask the questions.

It doesn't, and that's not who Dear Wiggo was referring to.

That's not the scenario or behavior that Dear Wiggo was referring to.

Again, you're all completely misinterpreting DW's post.

Then you're not looking close enough. People are working themselves into a frenzy over something that didn't happen, and accusations that weren't made.

Why do you imagine I want to fight you? This has moved a lot since my question to you. I have no further questions. Have a nice day.

I stay logged in so I can see 40 posts per page instead of 10.

I use the forum to learn. I honestly don't believe I have enough knowledge of the sport to contribute anything that would help a discussion along.

I love cycling and have learned heaps from posters such as yourself, Race Radio, Granville, Dave Q, etc. Thanks to all of you.

Cheers,
Greg

No worries mate. As Granville pointed out, it's more when that user suddenly starts posting prolifically, in the most contentious part of the forum, that it looks suss.

I hear you on the 40 posts per page. A shame it wrecks using google search to locate posts directly though.

the 'real' Mark L here..............posts submitted between october '14 and
02/12/14 were not made by myself

i'm surprised that sharp eyed members did not notice the change in posting style.........more complex lines of thoughts...........more intellectual choice of words...........no double spacing in posts.......starting posts with upper case letter

i have a good idea who had infiltrated my account but that id will remain a question of debate

my thoughts now is to distance myself from post referring to another member as being like an unpopular historical figure........that is not something i would ever do

mods may choose to close this account or i may be able to continue posting in my usual style

Did you contact any mods in that period?

If someone 'infiltrated' your account, how did you get it back?

3. Why did you not contact the mods or any other members during your ban? Because your account got banned while it was hacked?
