is this like a 'new mod initiation ritual?'...................once mods have a number of bans under

their belts they see their name in red

gotta be a good thing if it brings to an end pompous members calling others.........sock troll...........skybot etc

some level of consistency needs to be applied though....new Mods are laying down some hard lines and putting many members on the sidelines....this is great, but it's also very clear that some posters get dealt quite a degree of latitude and some most certainly do not....especially considering the associated offending.
I'm not going to name names, however, the Clinic is awfully toxic right now and posters are pretty much given free reign to lay waste and hang schitt on each other for pages & pages....then they get a brief warning and it stops.....other sections of the forum, this is not the case.....no warning or interruption.
Mods - you do a great job and a tough one, but.....please be consistent with ALL POSTERS / MEMBERS across the ENTIRE FORUM.

Could never be exact science, but a point system like in the AFL* would be a good start.

Example: 10 points per each initial personal insult, 3 points per each baiting post, 1 point per each trolling post (low score, because what for one is trolling is for the other opinion, thus hard to judge).

Once reaching 20 points = strike 1 (warning)
30 points = strike 2 (serious warning)
40 points = strike 3 & out for a while

it's not my job to police the forum.....you Guys and Gals do a pretty decent job as it is. Thank you for that
i don't report posts as i think' it's a little pathetic to go whining and moaning to the mods if someone says something out of order.
much is playground stuff and reactionary overflowing emotions based on putdowns with alpha dogs trying establish order over each other.
sad if some people can't accept a little criticism, another point of view or basically being told they are flat out wrong
most is actually quite humorous with some very intelligent, witty posters contributing.

my beef is just with consistency across the Forum especially amongst all posters
post count and agreeing with said poster should not be considered at all

Question - if a poster reports a post for any given reason, do you ever reply with "grow up" or "get over it" etc etc, or do you just issue then ban based on their reporting.
i would hope not.
i would also hope that you keep a watch on certain posters, their history of posting and their posting style.
i read most of the forum and it's plain to see some posters who have an agenda which is anything other than following in the spirit of the rules.

Good idea!

Two notes though on the bolded:
1. There's one poster who comes to mind that would easily have thousands of points on this.
2. Political threads would be quiet.

Why would political threads be quiet then? I´d say the quality would improve dramatically... Discussions where opinions are not shut down with sledge-hammer "arguments" like: "You are abcd (insert favourite insult here) because you don´t share my POV". Actually posters would have to debunk different opinions and facts with real arguments and counter-facts like links, studies, etc... And the side-effect would include less baitings in general...

I'll change my opinion, quieter at first, and then will get better over time.

I say that the best way is two 100% random bannings, (chosen by chance) for a week, every week :D

Just to keep people on their toes ;)

The clinic is always going to be the hardest place to moderate, as the topic of cheating is so polarising. There are also differing levels of knowledge, acceptance/naivete, passion and support. Then when you add in the occasional sarcastic comment, sock puppet or comedic genius (SOS to WonderLance :D ) you get a tinderbox ready to ignite at any moment.

I do have to say that while things aren't great at the moment it's nowhere near as crazy as when Armstrong was still riding and you had nuts like BPC/Arbiter, Jackhammer and other pro Armstrong loonies floating around.

Yep. The pretenders would disappear, and those with arguments would stay. Imagine Alpe, MI, and a few others really talk US politics for example. Could be a place in heaven with real information coming across to those not having everyday real-life experience in the USA.
It is all about proper moderation...
A point system would be a great start.

We have tried the points/three strikes thing. It just gets to complicated.

Each reported case is reviewed on its own merits. Sometimes action results, sometimes not. We do not automatically take action simply because a report is made.

But a report system can´t really work.
Example:
Member A: Posts a opinion, and underlines it with a link which includes studies
Member B: Dismisses it as "crude" (because it doesn´t go in line with his POV), and says "oh btw just shows what (insert your favaourite insult) you are".
Member A: Reacts. Thanks, "and you are a (insert another one of your favourite insults)".
Member B reports Member A now. Member A gets a warning or ban.

So Member B "wins" because of at least two low character issues:
1.) He is short on manners, because he can´t debunk a opinion with counter-facts (chances are high there are none anyway), so "needs" to insult personally. Btw, the initial attack also includes a baiting attempt: Not to discuss the matter, but to get personal. Which further means the post goes off topic.
2.) He is a coward. Instead to man up, he silently reports, even though knowing he initiated the counter-attack from Member A.

Result: Member A is gone who just tried to discuss a matter, while the one crying out loud to a 3rd party has the field alone. Now he thinks "Wow that works, let´s try it again with another member I don´t like"... After a few hundred rounds like this, you lost all the good posters, while the fanatics and loudspeakers are still there.

Demolition party. You want that?

If I was a mod, I read (for example) "You a-hole" in a post (reported or not): I go back to the post quoted. If the "you a-hole" is the inital attack: 20 points. Another "You a-hole" (or something like that) out of the blue > out with 40 points. Simple like that...

1) do you really think when we get a report we only read the post in question?
2) You get insulted, you report and don't reply. If you reply, you aren't any better than the initial offender. One could even argue you're worse.

I had reported with the "report-button" (some few months ago)* and wrote a text to underline what was personally insulting. Nothing happened, so I changed tactics and stroke back against the personal insulting posts and PMs.
Now I just stay away from the threads those guys "work" in. You, I, and 26 others can´t have me banned now, so I just stay quiet... A complete shut down.
It´s only a forum, so I can live with it. I just wanted to give some ideas of how to improve, thus posting the points idea.

* No one knows where those reports have gone. May they are flying high in the internet-cloud now. ;)

Got that Irondan (thus staying away from "action").
Again: I posted an idea, because reporting is like rolling a dice. Some insults are worth a ban, some not. A clear cut points system prevents such inconsistencies. That was all... Good?
Would be nice, but not priority number one (there is more important issues in the "improved forum", like fixing that quote mish-mash): A auto PM that your report was received.

Did the new tactic provide any spectacular results?

Very spectacular. ;) Almost banned. And you know it? No? I thought you mods talk to each other...
You know, if somebody hits you in the face, hit back, but not hold the other cheek.
But as I said, it´s only a Forum. So what... All good (for) now.

why this sudden crackdown on everything?

posters are going to be confused about what's allowed when the forum goes from no mods to Berzin style overmoderation all of a sudden.

Same here. No one can be sure of what goes and what not. A lottery...
That is why I urged the point system idea (there are certainly more or better ones, I put it up just as starters), before it got carried away...
I appreciate the work of the mods, especially since it´s not paid, but being open to new ideas... well, should not be a bad idea. :)

Glad to see Frank Day banned again. This is the third time for various spamming, trolling and baiting posts. But every time he comes back and does it again. When will he be permanently banned like he has from Slowtwitch and CyclingForums?
