I'm aware.

Bu that was clearly what Devil's Elbow hinted at:

"Pedersen winning a monument he wasn't supposed to race in would be quite the story, although I guess Danes have form for winning things they got called up for at the last minute."

I thought there had been a situation where something similar had happened in cycling.
And also more recently.

Contador did win his first Giro after being on beach holiday about a week previously because that's when Astana were invited. Majka's stage wins and KOM jersey in the 2014 Tour were also after an extremely late call-up. I was referring to Euro 92, though.

Contador and Majka are hardly Danish...

Even if the national anthem players of the 2009 Tour believed otherwise (for Contador).

Talking about strive for five. With all those guys withrawing from the race, anyone fancies Philippe Gilbert's chances?
I personally don't believe in fairytales but Belgian medium Sporza has a 'spy' in the peleton who believes he stands a chance.
Not in the slightest. I can't even imagine a reasonable scenario where it could happen.

I don’t think so. He doesn’t have the puncheur power anymore to stay with the best (Wout) on the Poggio, nor does he have a good enough sprint to win if the peloton comes back together before the finish. Those are pretty much the only ways to win here. It’s too bad because I thought he had it won in 2011 when he attacked out of the elite finishing group. But Pozzatto chased him down bringing the others back as well. This resulting in a sprint that Goss, the only one who wasn’t an elite classics rider in that finale, won.

So in a discussion about what I - quite naturally, if I may say so given the nature of this forum - thought was about Danes winning bike races after being called up the last minute, we've had, in order:

A Dane not-winning a bike race a few times.

A bunch of Danes winning a non-bike race.

A couple of non-Danes winning bike races.

It was the same for Éric Caritoux when he won the 1984 Vuelta, and the Skil team had forgot they were invited and couldn't get out of riding it. But that was obviously not more recent.

After Dave, the period we now live in contains Marginal Danes.

Throw Vingegaard in the mix. He ticks three of the four boxes.

Dane

Cyclist

Wasn't originally scheduled to do the Tour

But he only came somewhat close to winning.
