Moderation

CN is not here to "spark interesting debate" it's here to sell stuff, plain and simple.
Politics is against the rules because it gets out of hand and becomes impossible to police. It also results in users becoming unnecessarily antagonistic towards each other which also adds to the effort of moderation.

I got banned once by being dragged into politics inadvertently. Thankfully it was only a temporary ban and I learned my lesson ;)

Reactions: Tricycle Rider
In the beginning there was much good debate, but politics, like religion, radicalizes the content. And it has been so since Plato and the sacred mysteries of the unknown.
The saddest part of it is, there were some quality posters in there who have since become inactive, I enjoyed reading their take on pretty much anything, whether I agreed with it or not.

Did these posters also come around for some cycling talk, though, or did they just come around to talk some politics?
Mixed, I think. Of course everyone comes here because of cycling, but some don't post much in the PRR-sub. Many of the old café regulars were most often seen in the clinic outside of the café.

I looked up a middle page of the religion thread for a flavour of those exchanges: https://forum.cyclingnews.com/threads/research-on-belief-in-god.15686/page-54

The politics threads had a whole lot more dumb spats and name-calling, but very much ebb and flow.

Indeed! And with Eshnar also apparently leaving as a mod in the near future... inquiring minds want to know what's going on.
Nothing is going on. it's the same reason why I decided to stop with the Giro analysis. I've been a mod since 2013 and in the last 3-4 years have done no moderating at all, aside nuking the occasional spammer. If anything, I should have resigned sooner.
It wasn't a big problem as long as Rick was doing most of the actual work, but him leaving reminded me that I should also make space for some new people.

It's a big pair of boots to fill, and I'm honestly not sure who has the combination of activity, time, lack of (excessive) bias and temper to step up. I might have volunteered myself in the past, but I just don't have as much time these days and in any case I think I can get a little bit more heated than what you want from a mod...
