A moderator does not understand basic laws of fair use and what you can and post from a source, surely this should be ABC for the mods, like learning to ride a bike, do I blame the mod or the selection process which seems to be who wants to be a mod and accepting the first ones to put their hands up.

You do realise mods aren't paid don't you? They are normal users who give up their free-time to help the forum. They also come from a variety of different backgrounds and countries where basic laws could vary greatly. He didn't know the law, he knows it now, what exactly is the problem with that?

...it revolves around the point you made about the mods not being paid ( which is a common refrain oft heard around here to justify or explain something or other )....well the reality is no one here gets paid except the corporation that runs the joint....not unlike a nightclub where the performers don't get paid, they only get the satisfaction of performing ( providing the entertainment and enjoying the act of expression ), the bouncers don't get paid, they get the only satisfaction implicit in amateur bouncing ( keeping things, and being, in control, and maybe enjoying being one-up ), and the audience, well they pay by being grist in the new age internet driven consumption industry, and the only folks who actually get paid are those providing a venue for all the "fun" we have....
...its a funny business model ain't it....

I get all that but it has nothing to do with what we are actually talking about. The situation is as follows:
Someone links an article behind a paywall.
A mod asks if someone can post the full article verbatim.
A few posters point out that this is likely illegal and against the agreement we click when we sign up. You can post small sections of articles for analysis under most fair use laws (and this is where my point begins) but what constitutes fair use can become very difficult to decide.
The mod thanks the posters, says they have learnt something new and will contact the higher ups to fully educate themselves.
Everything is good, there has been no arguing or moderation (that I'm aware of) and everyone goes about their business as usual with a smile on their face.
Fast forward three hours after this was first pointed out to the moderator and Del comes in here with his ridiculous criticism.
Firstly, he says he can legitimately criticise moderation when no moderation has actually occurred. Secondly, he says that this is basic law every mod should know (it's far from basic on an international website) yet he himself has no real idea as you can see from this post:
You can't even expect paid lawyers or law enforcement professionals to know every law so expecting it from volunteer moderators on a cycling forum is patently ridiculous.
What makes it even more ridiculous is that it was a complete non-incident. If anything it shows great interaction between a mod and regular forum users as the mod is educated, thankful and implies they will make themselves better educated in future.
If anything we should be praising interactions like this.
Your point about unpaid users is completely valid, but it really has no relevance to this situation.

It would be interesting to see if a mod was at all concerned with the cultural stereotyping and borderline racism in this thread rather than a post debating whether someone can back a broad generalisation about the British media and British attitudes compared to other countries. I wonder if terms like 'the empire crew' would be allowed if something similarly mocking was used in reference to the Spanish or Italians, speaking as someone who was warned for using the term 'Italian mob' to describe a group of Italian riders. Brit bashing indeed, but of course the Brits are and continue to be fair game in this forum, presumably because the moderators are of the same mind as the posters. I even reported the use of the racism term 'wog' that a poster used to characterise British attitudes to foreigners and nothing was done. The misinformation, stereotyping and general mocking tone of the thread is appalling. Try doing something about that, but I won't hold my breath.

I'll say this: as a British person who isn't particularly patriotic that 'Brits don't dope' thread is a constant source of ire for me, I am mostly offended everyt time I go in there, I think it gives a platform for people to spout misinformed, prejudicial opinions which may be thoroughly amusing to many of you but I find offensive. There's one thing to debate your country's sportsmen on a doping board, its quite another to hear your countrymen and by dint of that yourself refereed to in derogatory, mocking tones, and consistent use of offensive cultural stereotypes. I've tried to avoid and ignore that thread but today I got fed up and felt the need to voice my objections to it. I want to debate doping objectively, not listen to people spout negative things about me and my country constantly. If you want to do that go down the pub, I don't think it has a place on the board and its high time it is cracked down on.

Totally agree, I see the mods have banned Bernie's eysesores for his humerous responses to the trolling of certain postes in the thread, pathetic moderation in my opinion
The mods also deleted a post of mine which quite rightly put perspective of how other nationalities media handled issues for comparison, a poster known for his constant trolling though I shouln't be able to post it, when I said no and why , the mods had zapped my post and said responses, I pm 'd the mod in the tread for why, still waiting for a response.

Do you report the posts which offend you? I think it would be difficult for the mods to address the more general comments you're making here without those specific posts.
