Because the racing was much harder back then. Some riders possibly never reached their top level after competing in two GTs in the same year at too young and age. Fignon and Breukink are two examples.

And Hinault struggled with knee problems in his career due to the gearing he had, which costed him at least a TdF win.

He only raced GTs that he knew he could win? He had been a pro for 3 years, and had won the Dauphiné and Liege, before entering his 1st GT as a team leader. He never had to serve an “apprenticeship” under another leader in GTs the way Lemond, Fignon, Indurain did.

He retired on his 32nd birthday, an age when Froome was only getting going.

In 9 years of riding GTs, he never rode 2 GTs in a season, 2 years in a row. That was probably not by design, he surely wanted to ride the 83 Tour after winning the Vuelta, but injury kept him out (and opened the door for Fignon).

More importantly Contador won 9 GTs in 18 attempts on the road, that's a great record. I don't think anybody else in the past 35 years has a 50% winning record. Even Lance is stuck at 47%.
